Disney to Test New Release Strategy with Upcoming Movies 'Shang-Chi' & 'Free Guy'

Disney will be deploying new release strategies for two of their most highly anticipated movies of the year!

The upcoming Marvel movie Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings starring Simu Liu and the upcoming Ryan Reynolds video game comedy Free Guy will both get theatrical releases, though they won’t be traditional ones that we’re used to.

Disney will release Free Guy in theaters on August 13 and Shang-Chi in theaters on September 3. After just 45 days in theaters, both of the films will be available to watch at home via VOD and streaming.

It’s not yet clear if the movies will be released exclusively on Disney+ or if they will be available for rental on services like iTunes, Amazon, and other VOD providers, according to Variety.

Disney’s next three movies will all be released on Disney+ with Premium Access, which requires a $30 fee in addition to your membership to view the movie unlimited times. These movies are Cruella on May 28, Black Widow on July 9, and one more movie that was just announced. They’re also expected to get theatrical releases on the same day.
