Here's the Story Behind Meghan Markle & Prince Harry's Baby Girl Lilibet's Name

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are parents once again with the arrival of their daughter, Lilibet Diana.

The news was confirmed on Sunday (June 6) in a royal press announcement.

And there’s a very sweet reason behind the name Lilibet, or “Lili,” as they’ve nicknamed her!

Lilibet is a tribute to Harry‘s grandmother, Queen Elizabeth. Lilibet was her nickname as a child by her family members as a nickname. She just recently signed off on the handwritten note atop the coffin of her late husband, Prince Philip with “Lilibet.” It was also a nickname used by the Queen’s father, King George VI.

The middle name, “Diana,” honors Princess Diana, Harry‘s late mother who died in a 1997 car crash in Paris, France.

It’s also not the first time she’s been honored in a naming: Prince William and Kate Middleton honored her memory while naming Princess Charlotte Elizabeth Diana in 2015.
