HBO Shockingly Cancels 'Lovecraft Country' After Just One Season

The hit series Lovecraft Country has been canceled by HBO after just one season.

The show debuted in August 2020 and had strong word of mouth throughout its first season, ultimately hitting its highest ratings mark for the season one finale.

“We will not be moving forward with a second season of Lovecraft Country,” HBO said in a statement to Deadline. “We are grateful for the dedication and artistry of the gifted cast and crew, and to Misha Green, who crafted this groundbreaking series. And to the fans, thank you for joining us on this journey.

The series was based on the book by Matt Ruff, so a second season would have been an original story. HBO’s chief content officer Casey Bloys said back in February that Misha was working on ideas for a second season, which gave fans hope that it would happen.

Misha previously said, “I envision a second season that carries on the spirit of Matt Ruff’s novel by continuing to reclaim the genre storytelling space that people of color have typically been left out of.”

Lovecraft Country follows Atticus Freeman (Jonathan Majors) as he joins up with his friend Letitia (Jurnee Smollett) and his Uncle George (Courtney B. Vance) to embark on a road trip across 1950s Jim Crow America in search of his missing father (Michael Kenneth Williams). This begins a struggle to survive and overcome both the racist terrors of white America and the terrifying monsters that could be ripped from a Lovecraft paperback.
