Remaining Portion of Miami Condo Building Has Been Demolished, 10 Days After Collapse

The remaining portion of the Champlain Towers South building has been demolished.

It has been ten days since a portion of the building collapsed, leaving over 100 people missing and dozens of people dead.

The 136-unit apartment complex called Champlain Towers, which is located in Surfside, Florida, partially collapsed at around 1:23am on June 24. It was originally reported that 99 people were missing and that one person had died. The missing count and the death toll have both risen significantly.

It has now been confirmed that 24 people have died and 121 people are still missing. The rescue crews paused their search on Sunday (July 4) while preparing for the demolition.

“We need to get back to [searching the rubble] as soon as possible. We need to get this building taken down and we need to move forward with the rescue of all those people that are still left in the rubble,” Mayor Charles Burkett said (via The Guardian).

He added, “The intention is to bring the building down in a westward direction so that the debris pile that exists with victims in it is not affected. You know, the [approaching storm] is going to turn out to have probably been a blessing in disguise because there’s an area of that mound which we were not able to work in safely. And this demolition is going to open up wide the whole area. And we’re going to be able to pour resources onto that pile.”
