'Friends' Co-Creator Marta Kauffman Blames Herself For Lack of Diversity On The Show

Marta Kauffman is opening up again about the lack of diversity on Friends.

During the new CNN series, History of a Sitcom, Marta opened up about how she does blame herself for the issue.

“It was, to a certain extent, a product of the time period and of my own ignorance,” she admitted during the program. “There were Black shows and there were white shows. There weren’t a lot of shows that were interracial.”

Marta added, “I guess at the time I was thinking, ‘This is what I know. This is what I know.’”

The new comments come just a week after actress Sherri Shepherd, who guest starred as Rhonda on the show, opened up about the lack of diversity.

“When you have a show set in New York — and I’ve lived in New York for nine years — and I always saw diversity. All the time,” Sherri stated.

This also isn’t the first time Marta has opened up about the issue. She first commented on the lack of diversity last year during the ATX Festival. Here’s what she said…
