Joaquin Phoenix meets up with Antonio Banderas inside the Variety 10 Directors to Watch Brunch during the 2020 Palm Springs International Film Festival held at Parker Palm Springs on Friday afternoon (January 3) in Palm Springs, Calif.

The two actors stepped out at the event to honor the ten emerging filmmakers. Joaquin also presented an Variety Creative Impact in Directing Award to Joker‘s Todd Phillips.

Martin Scorsese also presented Robert De Niro with the Creative Impact in Acting Award, and Cynthia Erivo presented Lena Waithe with the Creative Impact in Producing Award.

The awards celebrate the filmmakers and actors for their outstanding contributions to the art and business of cinema.

The 10 Directors to Watch are Blast Beat‘s Esteban Arango, La Belle Epoque‘s Nicholas Bedos, The 40-Year-Old Version‘s Radha Blank, Janicza Bravo, Mati Diop, Judy‘s Rupert Goold, Les Miserables‘s Ladj Ly, BabyTeeth‘s Shannon Murphy, Naked Singularity‘s Chase Palmer and Holler‘s Nicole Riegel.

Salma Hayek and Antonio Banderas team up at the 2019 Palm Springs International Film Festival Awards Gala!

The 53-year-old Grown Ups actress and the 59-year-old Pain and Glory actor stepped out for the event held at Palm Springs Convention Center on Thursday (January 2) in Palm Springs, Calif.

Salma presented Antonio with the International Star Award for his work in the film.

They were joined by Salma‘s husband Francois-Henri Pinault and Antonio‘s girlfriend Nicole Kimpel.

“Getting ready for the Palm Springs International Film Festival where I am very honored to present @antoniobanderasoficial with the International Star Award – Actor,” Salma captioned the Instagram photo below.

Antonio Banderas is opening up about one of his big decisions after suffering a heart attack in 2017.

The 59-year-old Pain and Glory actor spoke out in an interview for The Big Ticket, Variety and iHeart’s movie podcast.

During the interview, he revealed that opening his new theater company, the Teatro del Soho CaixaBank in Málaga, Spain – which includes a school for 600 students – came to him directly after his health scare.

“I came [to] the conclusion that I had to do the things that I want to do, that I don’t want to die thinking, ‘I should have done that or I should have said that.’ Money in the bank became kind of a very Machiavellian intellectual thing,” he revealed.

“When you get close to death, only the essential things remain. Things that you thought at some point that were very important, they disappear,” he went on to say.

“Movies became an enormous accident in my career, an accident of over 112 movies, but the thing that I fell in love with in my profession is the theater, seeing actors on the stage, a group of people just telling stories to another group of people. I just love that ritual. There was something there, very specific, very beautiful that has to do with civilization, with the possibility of these people reflecting in front of others about ourselves. You can make them laugh, you can make them cry, you can go to many different places,” he said of his love for theater.

Stella Banderas and Grace Johnson, who are both the daughters of Hollywood legends, walk the red carpet together at the 2019 Vanity Fair Awards on Monday (November 25) in Madrid, Spain.

The young ladies were at the event to support Stella‘s dad Antonio Banderas, who received the Most Influential Person of the Year award.

Stella and Grace are both the younger sisters of Dakota Johnson, though they technically aren’t related by blood or marriage.

Stella‘s parents are Antonio Banderas and Melanie Griffith while Grace‘s parents are Don Johnson and his current wife Kelley Phleger. As you probably know, Dakota‘s parents are Melanie and Don.

Antonio was joined at the event by his girlfriend Nicole Kempel.

The 30-year-old actress honored the 59-year-old actor with the Hollywood Actor Award for his role in Pain and Glory at the 2019 Hollywood Film Awards on Sunday (November 3) at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, Calif.

Antonio was married to Dakota‘s mom Melanie Griffith from 1996-2015.

Also supporting Antonio at the event was his daughter Stella Banderas and his girlfriend Nicole Kimpel.

The night before, Dakota was in New York City to support boyfriend Chris Martin where he and Coldplay performed on Saturday Night Live.

Antonio Banderas credits his girlfriend Nicole Kimpel with saving his life when he had a heart attack in 2017.

The 59-year-old actor says that the night before the medical emergency, Nicole happened to have purchased maximum strength aspirin for a headache.

“The night before that I had this event, my girlfriend, she had a headache and we didn’t have anything in the house. So she went out to buy something, a painkiller or whatever. She bought this aspirin, which is the only thing that she found and she found the maximum one, I think it was five milligrams,” Antonio explained on Jimmy Kimmel Live!

He continued, “The next morning, when I started having the symptoms and I clearly knew what was going on, she put one of those aspirins inside of my tongue and that saved my life. So I had a second chance, and some stuff changed in my life, since then.”

Madonna wanted Antonio Banderas, and he’s reacting to her pursuit!

The 59-year-old The Laundromat star sat down for an interview with SiriusXM’s Jess Cagle and Julia Cunningham on The Jess Cagle Show.

During the interview, the two asked about a part of Madonna‘s film Truth or Dare, in which she talked about her crush on the actor and her failed efforts to hook up with him. As it turns out, he had no idea!

“I was finishing The Mambo Kings here in Los Angeles, and she called me one morning. I thought someone was just making a joke at me. Because I picked up my phone in my hotel room and it was Madonna. I couldn’t believe it,” he said.

“She said, ‘Listen, I want to show you this documentary that you are in.’ And I said, ‘What? What documentary? What are you talking about?’” he went on to say, adding that she offered the option to remove the scenes if he was uncomfortable, but he said it was fine.

At the time, Antonio was married to his first wife, Ana Leza.
