Awkwafina Says She Loves To Surprise People Watching Her Movies On Airplanes!

Awkwafina could say hi to you the next time you’re on a plane!

While making an appearance on A Little Late With Lilly Singh on Monday (January 20), the 31-year-old Golden Globe-winning actress revealed her typical reaction when she sees someone watching Crazy Rich Asians or Ocean’s Eight on a flight.

Crazy Rich Asians on the plane, I love it! There’s been times when I’m watching Crazy Rich Asians and then I see people around me watching Crazy Rich Asians and Ocean’s Eight,” Awkwafina admitted. “I’ll go up to them. 1 out of 10 times they actually get that I was in the movies – the rest not too good.”

Awkwafina also spilled what it was like getting her start on YouTube, and dished about her upcoming series Awkwafina is Nora from Queens on Comedy Central.

Awkwafina Addresses Oscars 2020 Snub: 'There's Always More Work to Be Done'

Awkwafina has had an incredible year, and she isn’t letting anything get in the way of that.

While promoting her upcoming show Nora From Queens at the 2020 TCA press tour, the 31-year-old actress reflected on all the success her film The Farewell has received – despite not being nominated for an Oscar for her role.

“We had a couple of text messages but everything [was] just about how appreciative we all are of how long this run has been,” Awkwafina said via Entertainment Tonight. “The Farewell came out last January at Sundance and we really didn’t know where it would take us. To see all the attention that it’s gotten, that feels like a win.”

Awkwafina added: “Bottom line, there were some amazing performances this year. I think all of them were warranted as they should have been. That’s not also to say that we can’t ignore the fact that there are some incredible movies that were women-helmed, including mine, The Farewell. Me personally, I feel very grateful for where I am and where we’ve come.”

“My emotional reaction to all of this really is that I’m grateful for this journey. We didn’t know that The Farewell would literally have a home,” Awkwafina continued. “We didn’t know if anybody would buy The Farewell, that it would be on the screens. To express that as far as we’ve come, it’s so much more. It’s the journey. For that, me personally, I think there’s always more work to be done. Of course.”

Earlier this month, Awkwafina made history as the first Asian American to win a Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy for her role in The Farewell.

“I’ve had a pretty exciting ride and I think with this show and with the movies that we’ve seen this year, representation existed in those movies and that’s what I know,” Awkwafina said. “In terms of anything else, I can’t be more grateful to do what I love to do and to be recognized, to be a little bit for that, is enough. It’s great.”

Heidi Klum & Tim Gunn Reveal Why They 'Jumped Ship' from 'Project Runway' to 'Making the Cut'!

Heidi Klum and Tim Gunn are opening up about their decision to leave Project Runway!

While speaking at the Amazon studios panel during the 2020 Winter TCA Tour – Day 8 at The Langham Huntington on Tuesday (January 14), the 46-year-old host and 66-year-old mentor explained why they decided to “jump ship” from Project Runway ahead of it’s move to Bravo to create their forthcoming Amazon show Making the Cut, which debuts March 27.

“Our imagination was bigger than what we were allowed to do,” Heidi expressed (via THR). “Everything kind of fell apart.” She said the move from Lifetime back to Bravo was either going to mean returning to the “same old same old” or it was an “opportunity to jump ship.” She asked Gunn, “Do you want to jump with me?” Klum said, “It was scary. … We shopped it around and thought that Amazon was the best place, not only for the show but also for the designers.”

Heidi Klum and Tim were joined at the panel by Naomi Campbell, Nicole Richie, and Altuzarra creative director Joseph Altuzarra, who will appear as judges with them on Making the Cut.

Tim also hinted that executives at Project Runway were afraid of changing the format of the fashion reality show, even at the urging of Klum and Gunn. “We couldn’t break out of it because there was a fear — not among us, we’re the ones who were thinking creatively and innovatively about what we wanted to do.”

That same day, Awkwafina joined her co-stars BD Wong and Bowen Yang at their panel for their upcoming series Awkwafina is Nora from Queens during the Comedy Central segment of the 2020 Winter TCA Press Tour.

“I don’t see it right now. That’s not to say that it’s not a possibility. I created Awkwafina when I was a kid. What she represents to me is more than a persona — in the very beginning, I did see her as the confident one, the side that comes out that gives Nora the panic attacks,” she explained.

“But as I’ve grown older I’ve come to really be grateful for that name and what I’ve seen it written on. To see her name on a chair back or on a call sheet, that means a lot to me. I don’t think that I could shed her right now.”

“I showed her a screener of The Farewell and she got up basically at the most pivotal part,” Awkwafina admits. “And I was like, ‘Where are you going?’ And she was like, ‘I gotta cook.’ So I went on national television and I told that story, and she felt so guilty so now she goes to see all of my movies.”

“She got up in the middle, and then she went to see it in theaters and she was like, ‘I stayed, alright?,” Awkwafina adds.
