Former President Barack Obama‘s grandmother, Sarah Ogwel Onyango Obama, has passed away at the age of 99.
She had been hospitalized at Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral hospital in Kisumu, Kenya, and passed on Monday morning (March 29).
“She died this morning. We are devastated,” her daughter, Marsat Onyango, confirmed (via ABC).
“Mama was sick with normal diseases she did not die of COVID-19,” a family spokesman added.
Sarah Obama was the second wife of former President Obama’s grandfather and she helped raise his father, Barack Obama, Sr. The former President affectionately referred to her as “granny” in his book “Dreams from My Father.” She attended his inauguration in 2009.
My family and I are mourning the loss of our beloved grandmother, Sarah Ogwel Onyango Obama, affectionately known to many as “Mama Sarah” but known to us as “Dani” or Granny. We will miss her dearly, but we’ll celebrate with gratitude her long and remarkable life. pic.twitter.com/avDY4f1PVu
