Benedict Cumberbatch Teams With Netflix For ‘The 39 Steps’ Limited Series

Benedict Cumberbatch is filling up his roster with another limited series project.

The 44-year-old actor will star in The 39 Steps, which is an update of the classic thriller novel by John Buchan. The book was previously turned into a film by Alfred Hitchcock.

Deadline reports that the project will be directed by Edward Berger, who previously teamed with Benedict on Patrick Melrose, and Mark L. Smith will write the series for Netflix.

The 39 Steps is a provocative, action-packed conspiracy thriller series that updates the classic novel for relevance in contemporary times.

An ordinary man, Richard Hannay, becomes an unwitting pawn in a vast, global conspiracy to reset the world order: 39 Steps that will change the world as we know it, with only Hannay standing in the way.

Benedict will also executive produce the limited series with his producing partner Adam Ackland under their SunnyMarch production company.

Benedict Cumberbatch has a fear that he could be "patient zero" when it comes to bringing the coronavirus to the United States.

In a new interview while discussing his new movie, The Mauritanian, the 44-year-old actor opened up about the fear.

He had been shooting the movie in Cape Town, South Africa, when he became "terribly ill with what he believes now was COVID-19", and although he kept filming, Benedict was "throwing up between takes."

"I was incredibly ill, to the point that when all this COVID stuff suddenly broke in the new year, I was thinking, 'Oh my god, was I actually patient zero?'" Benedict wondered. "I was so ill — it was borderline pneumonia."

There had been an ongoing search into which person could be patient zero. However, no one has ever been named.

The Mauritanian is currently available to stream on Amazon Prime Video.

Benedict Cumberbatch Is Apologizing To ‘WandaVision’ Fans After They Expected Him To Show Up On The Series

WandaVision fans were a little let down when Benedict Cumberbatch didn't show up on the Disney+ series during its nine episode run.

Fans had been theorizing that the 44-year-old Doctor Strange star would pop up on the series, after it was confirmed that Elizabeth Olsen would bring the Scarlet Witch to the upcoming Doctor Strange sequel, The Multiverse of Madness.

However, it never happened, and it turns out that Benedict didn't even know fans were hoping for such. Many fans even noticed this big hint!

"I’m sorry to disappoint you. That would have been fun, I guess," Benedict shared in a recent interview on ReelBlend. "It would have led into Lizzie’s involvement with the movie. That’s all to come."

However, Benedict did make up for it a bit by spilling some news about the sequel, saying that they're filming on the project now.

"We're in the middle of it now – We’ve been filming since before Christmas and it’s very exciting."

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is expected to bow in 2022.
