Billie Eilish & Billie Joe Armstrong Discuss Tour Life & Staying Sane

Billie Eilish and Billie Joe Armstrong are featured in Rolling Stone‘s Musicians on Musicians issue, out on November 5.

Here’s what the 17-year-old “Bad Guy” singer and the 47-year-old Green Day star had to say…

Billie Eilish, on her next album and feeling alone while on tour: “[My next album] haunts me. There was a period where I was like, ‘Do I even enjoy music?’ It just felt like so much touring. And I don’t mean the shows. The shows are always my favorite part. But it was just traveling and being alone all the time, on a cold bus in Europe, horrible food, and when you come back, everyone’s kind of moved on from you. This last tour I went on was the first I’ve ever enjoyed. I feel like I have this amazing thing that now I actually see.”

Billie Eilish, on performing with Billie Joe Armstrong in the audience: “I have never been so conscious of myself during a show than knowing that Billie Joe Armstrong was in the crowd.”

Billie Eilish on what advice she would give to her younger self: “I don’t really believe in advice. Sometimes when I’m given advice, I do the opposite. It’s just how I’ve been my whole life. Nobody has ever been through exactly what you’re going through, ever. [Billie Joe] is the only person that’s ever going to live through what he has. So no one can know except this dude, and the fact that he’s still sane, he’s still gorgeous, he’s still him, having gone through all this s–t? It’s like, I don’t even know.”

Billie Joe Armstrong on Green Day’s longevity and keeping it real: “Even though it is tempting to sort of sell out, you have to keep being real. When it comes down to it, I have to wake up and look at myself every morning and respect what I do. And I don’t love everything I’ve ever done.”

Green Day's Billie Joe Armstrong Speaks Out About Acrobat's Death at Mad Cool Festival

Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong has released a statement following the death of an acrobat prior to their set at the 2017 Mad Cool Festival this weekend in Madrid, Spain.

Pedro Aunión Monroy sadly plunged to his death in front of concertgoers while doing an aerial stunt before the band hit the stage.

“We are so sad for Pedro and his family and we pray for them in this time of grief,” Billie wrote. “I can’t imagine how much suffering the friends and family are going through.”

“Many of you are wondering why we continued to play our show after the accident. Green Day did not hear about the accident until after our show was over,” he said. “We didn’t even know there was an acrobat performance at all. these festivals are huge. There are so many things happening at the same time it’s impossible to keep up with every performer/artist.”

“If we had known prior to our performance we most likely would not have played at all,” Billie said. “We are not heartless people. The safety and well being at any of our concerts absolutely comes first.”

“What happened to Pedro is unthinkable. Once again we are heartbroken for his friends and family. and we are also shocked and heartbroken for anyone that had to witness this tragedy,” he concluded.

Our thoughts go out to Pedro‘s family and friends right now.
