'West Side Story' Delayed an Entire Year, 'Black Widow' Moves to May 2021 Amid Pandemic

Two more major movies are being delayed amid the very slow box office as the COVID-19 pandemic is still going on.

Marvel has officially delayed Black Widow to May 7, 2021. The movie was originally supposed to be released in May 2020, then November of 2020. Now, hopefully, May of 2021 it is.

Marvel’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is being moved from the May 7 date to July 9, 2021. The Eternals will now debut in November of 2021.

Steven Spielberg‘s West Side Story was supposed to be released this coming December, however, the studio has pushed the film a full year to December 10, 2021.

Disney also decided to push Death on the Nile from October 23 to December 18.

Pixar’s Soul is still set for November 2020, for now.

Stay tuned as more movies could be expected to change release dates.

'Black Widow' Considering a Release Date Move Amid Pandemic

Black Widow might be moving.

Disney is considering a move of the Scarlett Johansson-starring film’s theatrical release date amid the pandemic, Deadline reported Tuesday (September 15).

“Not everyone is ready to go back to theater, and it’s going to take a long time before moviegoers are comfortable. Warner Bros.’ domestic box office for Tenet, which only made $6.7M in its second stateside weekend (technically 3rd) is an indicator of this, of course, with New York, Los Angeles and San Francisco closures being a further stumbling block. As such, exhibition sources tell us that Disney is pondering a theatrical release date move for Black Widow off its Nov. 6 date. There’s no concrete idea of where it goes, whether its somewhere in December or next year yet. It could easily move to Marvel’s The Eternals release date of Feb. 12 next year,” the outlet reported.

There is also some talk of Soul moving to Disney+.

“A Disney insider today disputed claims that Soul was moving to Disney Plus. The pic is currently scheduled for a Nov. 20 theatrical release against MGM’s No Time to Die,” the outlet also clarified.

Scarlett‘s Marvel baton is being passed to this actress…

Scarlett Johansson's Marvel Baton Being Handed To Florence Pugh in 'Black Widow'

The Black Widow baton is being handed over from Scarlett Johansson to Florence Pugh.

In a recent interview with Empire magazine, director Cate Shortland opened up about how the upcoming Marvel movie will serve as a baton passing, of sorts between Natasha and Florence‘s Yelena.

“[Kevin Feige] realized that the audience would expect an origin story so, of course, we went in the opposite direction,” she shared. “We didn’t know how great Florence Pugh would be. We knew she would be great, but we didn’t know how great.”

Cate added, “Scarlett is so gracious, like, ‘Oh, I’m handing her the baton.’ So it’s going to propel another female storyline.”

The director also opened up about how Black Widow will also be a proper goodbye to Natasha Romanoff, as fans weren’t exactly happy with how the character left in Avengers: Endgame.

“In Endgame, the fans were upset that Natasha did not have a funeral. Whereas Scarlett, when I spoke to her about it, said Natasha wouldn’t have wanted a funeral,” Cate said. “She’s too private, and anyway, people don’t really know who she is.”

“So what we did in this film was allow the ending to be the grief the individuals felt, rather than a big public outpouring. I think that’s a fitting ending for her.”

Black Widow is expected to open in theaters on November 6th.
