Brittany Murphy Docu-Series Coming to HBO Max

A Brittany Murphy series is coming.

HBO Max will be exploring the late star’s rise and mysterious death in 2009 in a two-part documentary series, THR reported Thursday (March 18).

The series “will be a character portrait of the young actress’ quick career assent and mysterious end — one that a coroner chalked up to pneumonia, even though Murphy was just 32 years old at the time of her death. Five months later, her widower Simon Monjack was found dead at their Hollywood Hills home after also seemingly succumbing to pneumonia.”

The series also promises to “go beyond the conspiracy theories and headlines” of her death and feature new interviews with those closest to her, as well as previously unseen archival footage.

“I agreed to do this film because I think it’s a shame that Brittany’s promising life and career has been eclipsed by the circumstances of her death. I think it’s important to celebrate Brittany’s talent as we struggle to explain the tragic circumstances of her and Simon’s deaths,” said director Cynthia Hill.

“Our Brittany Murphy documentary cuts through the tabloid noise with an elevated, nuanced depiction of a sensational story. Crafting a grounded account of Brittany Murphy’s life struggles and sudden passing comes with great responsibility and we’ve partnered with a masterful creative team to produce a thoughtful examination of a tragedy that has long been cause for speculation,” said HBO Max’s Jennifer O’Connell.

Another docu-series was recently announced at Hulu, which will explore a popular fashion brand’s backstory.

Alicia Silverstone Remembers 'Adorable' Brittany Murphy on 'Clueless' 25th Anniversary

Alicia Silverstone is looking back on Clueless 25 years later.

The 43-year-old actress, who played Cher Horowitz in the film, talked about the movie with Vogue in honor of the film’s 25th-annviersary.

During the chat, Alicia recalled her time on set of the 1995 film with co-star Brittany Murphy, who suddenly died on December 20, 2009 when she was only 32.

Alicia recalled the audition process, saying she thought Brittany was “so great” for the role on Tai Frasier.

“I just remember thinking she was so great for the part,” Alicia said. “I can’t remember how many girls came in to audition for Tai that day and I don’t know if I saw a few girls for it or just her, but I remember Brittany being really adorable.”

“She’s so good at the little accent because she had one already, but I think she just pushed it to new heights,” Alicia continued. “I found her so wonderful and I said to [director] Amy [Heckerling] right away ‘I think she’s the one! She was the best one you guys!’ hoping they would agree. She was like ‘Uh yeah duh. Of course she was the best, she’s the one.’”

Alicia also talked about how she and Brittany where the only two actual teenagers at the time of filming Clueless.

“I remember her mom was on set a lot. I brought my mom around a little bit and we would all spend time together. But I don’t think we had any intellectual idea about us being up-and-comers in a big movie because we didn’t know we were in a big movie,” Alicia said. “Maybe other people knew, but I was so innocent and never really paying attention to career stuff at all. I was just doing another job. It was a really great acting part that was different because… Well, first of all I didn’t know I was funny.”

During an interview back in April, Alicia revealed what her favorite line from Clueless is!

Clueless is available for streaming on Netflix now.

Brittany Murphy's Death Explored in New Documentary Special

A new documentary special is exploring the death of actress Brittany Murphy and the cause of her death at the age of 32.

The Investigation Discovery network’s new ID Mystery special questions if Brittany‘s husband Simon Monjack had something to do with her death.

After Brittany passed away in 2009, the Los Angeles County coroner said that her death was an “accident caused by a combination of pneumonia, an iron deficiency and ‘multiple drug intoxication.’” Months later, Simon died from acute pneumonia and severe anemia.

The documentary features the final interview with Brittany‘s father Angelo Bertolotti, who passed away last year. In his interview, he “casts doubt on the conclusion that she died of natural causes and reveals bizarre allegations against other family members.”

Then downfall of Brittany‘s career is also explored in the documentary. After having big hits in the early 2000s with 8 Mile, Just Married, and Uptown Girls, she was only offered low budget roles in the years before her death. People close to her associated this with the introduction of Simon into her life.

“Many connect Brittany‘s diminished career to a change in her life,” the show’s narrator stated in the special.

You can watch the full special for free on ID’s website. Check out the trailer below!
