Game of Thrones' Carice van Houten Says Fan Reaction Feels 'Ungrateful'

Carice van Houten – who played Melisandre in Game of Thrones – is speaking out about the fan backlash to the final season and how it ended.

“I loved the randomness and clumsiness of picking a king,” she told Insider. “That’s why I loved the first season, the guy who actually was king [Robert Baratheon], didn’t want to be king, so we already got a lesson in the beginning: ‘Why are you striving for that sort of power when, obviously, it doesn’t make you happy?’”

She added that it “feels a bit ungrateful” to have fans speaking out saying they hated the last season.

“The fact that some people were so disappointed is because everything before that was so good,” she said. “You’ve had such great times and then yeah, you’re going to be disappointed because it’s not going to go exactly how you anticipated. Of course, you’re going to have all sorts of criticisms and I just thought it was a sign of how good the show was.”

And about the petition made to remake the final season, Carice added, ”That’s extremism. That’s scary. Knowing the writers and knowing how f***ing great they are, they don’t deserve that.”

These 'Game of Thrones' Actors Had to Submit Themselves for Emmys When HBO Didn't (& They Got Nominations!)

Game of Thrones and HBO personally submitted seven actors for Emmy nomination consideration this year: Emilia Clarke, Kit Harington, Lena Headey, Sophie Turner, Maisie Williams, Peter Dinklage and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau.

All seven actors deservedly got nominations for the 2019 Emmy Awards. However, HBO did not submit the names of three actors who also received nominations due to self-submission.

Emmy rules allow actors to self-submit for nominations with a fee of $225. This year, Gwendoline Christie (Brienne of Tarth), Alfie Allen (Theon Greyjoy) and Carice van Houten (Melisandre) all decided to self-submit after HBO did not include them with their submissions. All three earned nominations at the 2019 Emmys!
