Chadwick Boseman's Widow Simone Accepts His Posthumous Gotham Award with Tearful Speech

Chadwick Boseman was awarded a special posthumous Tribute Prize at the 2021 Gotham Awards and his widow Taylor Simone Ledward was on hand to accept the award.

Simone gave a touching and tearful speech in which she honored her late husband, who died last year at the age of 43 following a battle with colon cancer.

“He is the most honest person I’d ever met,” Simone said. “He actively searched for it, in himself, those around him and the moment. The truth can be a very easy thing for the self to avoid. But if one does not live in truth, then it’s impossible to live life.”

“So it became how he lived his life, day in and day out,” she continued. “Imperfect but determined. He was blessed to live many lives within his concentrated one. He developed his understanding of what it meant to be the one, the none and the all. ‘A vessel to be poured into and out of,’ he’d said.”

Simone added, “He harnessed the power of letting go, and letting God’s love shine through. He realized that when one is able to recognize that when their strength does not come from themself, they rarely mess up. That’s what he was doing when he was acting. Modeling for us a path to true fulfillment. May we not let his conviction be in vain. May our spirits be fertile soil for God’s wisdom to fall upon. So thank you. Praise God.”

While wrapping up the speech, she said, “Chad, thank you. I love you. I am so proud of you. Keep shining your light on us. Thank you.”

Chadwick is expected to get an Oscar nomination for his work in the Netflix movie Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.

He added, “I love that [Chadwick's] like, ‘Yeah, I’m gonna challenge you. We’re gonna challenge each other’.”

Chadwick‘s co-star Glynn Turman also noted that as soon as you entered the hotel they were all staying at, all you could hear was Chadwick‘s trumpet playing.

“We were all staying in the same hotel. It started sounding like, you know, a music school,” he shared. “You get off the elevator and you could hear Chadwick, you know, working on it. Made you say, ‘Hey, I don’t want to practice right now, but I better get to start practicing.’”

Posthumously, Chadwick was named the winner of the Best Actor award at the L.A. Film Critics Association Awards over the weekend, and was honored by the New York Film Critics Circle as well.

Chadwick Boseman's 'Ma Rainey' Co-Star Viola Davis Talks About the Moment She Learned He Died

Chadwick Boseman‘s final movie Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom is now streaming and his co-star Viola Davis is opening up both about his death and his legacy.

The late actor passed away in August at the age of 43 following a private, four-year battle with colon cancer.

Viola talked about the moment she learned of Chadwick‘s death while talking to Yahoo about the movie.

“I broke down when I heard he passed,” she said. “Lord knows we all would’ve wanted him to live another 50 years. We all want longevity. But I can’t see his life tragically at all. … Because I felt like he was always living in the moment, squeezing out every bit of life. What it makes me think is, it’s not the quantity, it’s the quality.”

“What I hold onto with Chad is that he lived his life his way,” she added. “I would say his professional life as absolutely paralleled his personal life, that’s my guess, in terms of how he lived with the utmost integrity.”

Denzel Washington Told Chadwick Boseman To 'Put a Ring On' Taylor Simone Ledward's Finger

Denzel Washington is opening up about one of the more important lessons he passed on to the late Chadwick Boseman before his passing this year.

In a new interview with CBS Sunday Morning, Denzel, 65, opened up about working with Chadwick on his final film, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, and recalled telling Chadwick to marry Taylor Simone Ledward before someone else did.

While filming the movie, Chadwick and Taylor were only dating, but Denzel noted how well she was caring for Chadwick on the set.

“It’s fascinating that nobody knew,” Denzel shared about Chadwick‘s private battle with colon cancer. “Well, credit to him; he kept it to himself. It was nobody’s business. He was there to deliver and he delivered.”

He went on, saying that “Certain members of his team knew. His wife was there. They weren’t even married yet, and I used to watch how she took care of him, and I actually said to him, I said, ‘Man, you know, you need to put a ring on that finger,’ cause she kept her eye on him and she watched him.”

Denzel adds, “And I’m like, ‘Man, she loves that guy.’ You know, but I didn’t know what we know now.”

Chadwick and Taylor were married in a private ceremony earlier in the year and not a lot of people knew he was married until news of his passing shocked fans.

If you didn’t know, Denzel actually paid for Chadwick to attend acting school.

It was just recently reported that Taylor is still entitled to Chadwick‘s estate, despite not being in his will at the time of his death. Get the details here…
