Christian Serratos Explains Why She Doesn't Sing in 'Selena' Series on Netflix

Selena: The Series just shot to number one on Netflix after being released on Friday (December 4) and the show’s star Christian Serratos is speaking out about why her singing voice is not featured in the series.

The 30-year-old actress, who is best known for her work on The Walking Dead, opened up to Variety about choosing not to sing.

Christian revealed that it was originally intended to have the actress on the series provide a singing voice, but she knew fans would want to hear Selena.

“I recorded quite a few songs, and I think it was always supposed to be the actress singing but… I always wanted it to be Selena because I was such a fan,” Christian said. “I think people were confused by that because I never wanted to be a pop star, but I always wanted to act in films where I got the opportunity to just sing. They were like, ‘Here’s your chance to show people you can sing.’ I was like, ‘But it’s not about me; it’s never been about me.’ I just want the fans to see their girl. I want them to see their girl. I don’t want to hear me. I want to hear Selena.”

Jennifer Lopez also didn’t do her own singing in the Selena movie.

Selena‘s husband recently spoke out to share his thoughts on the Netflix show.

Selena Quintanilla's Husband Shares Thoughts on New Netflix Series

The late Selena Quintanilla‘s husband Chris Perez is sharing his thoughts on the new Netflix series about her life.

Selena: The Series just premiered on the streaming service and Chris, 51, took to Instagram to talk about his experiences with the band.

“Alright so, here is my take on this. I loved her music even before I joined the band. I was intrigued by the fact that her brother had his name on everything as producer,” Chris began his post.

Chris continued, “Keyboard player Ricky Vela was my hero as far as musicianship goes. Her dad ran some amazing sound when I went to see them at an event in San Antonio. I learned so much by taking on their guitar player Roger Garcia’s parts and doing my best to stretch it even further. They had a girl drummer that laid it DOWN (Suzette really is a badass). Joe and Pete brought the “extra” and added a whole other dimension PLUS Pete wrote amazing lyrics….and they sounded HEAVY.”

On the new series he said, “I will forever respect the band and the people involved in it. I hope you guys enjoy this series.”

The Walking Dead actress Christian Serratos plays Selena in the series while Chris is portrayed by Jesse Posey.

Back in April, Chris reacted to the the series by saying, “For the record, never met him, haven’t seen the script, and I have NO idea what is going on, but, I’d love to find out.”

For those that don’t know, Chris actually tried to make a TV series about his relationship with Selena, but he was sued by her father in 2016 over a claim that he didn’t have thr rights to make the show.

Christian Serratos Talks Pressures of Playing Selena Quintanilla in New Netflix Series

Christian Serratos is opening up about playing Selena Quintanilla.

In a new interview, the 30-year-old actress talked about the pressures of playing the Tejano star in the upcoming Netflix show Selena: The Series.

“I felt so much pressure to be and bring Selena back to the screen,” Christian shared with ET. “I know what an important role this is and I know how important it is for all her fans and her family, so I definitely worked really hard to try and be as honestly Selena as I could.”

Before even landing the role, Christian said that she started working with a dialect coach and a singing coach to perfect her Selena impersonation.

“I had never had this much responsibility before, and I just wanted to use every resource that I could,” Christian explained. “So I started working with a dialect coach on my own before I had the job, which I think was really helpful. I started working with my singing coach, who I love so much, Eric Vitro, before I booked the job, and he also helped me with the audition.”

Also in the interview, Christian revealed that some of the more challenging scenes to film were the performances.

I feel like those are the moments where they’re gonna say like, ‘Come through! Show up as Selena, let’s go!’” Christian admitted. “Those are the moments that are most fun but also I know are gonna be the most work, because I have to do what the fans want, I have to be her. And that’s a lot of pressure.”
