Cynthia Nixon Calls JK Rowling's Anti-Trans Tweets 'Baffling'

Cynthia Nixon is opening up about JK Rowling‘s controversial comments about the transgender community in a recent interview.

The 54-year-old actor spoke to The Independent, revealing that her trans son was very hurt by the author’s comments.

“It was really painful for him because so much of his childhood was tied up with Harry Potter,” she shared, speaking of her now 23-year-old son, Seph.

Cynthia continued, “We’re a Harry Potter family. The books seem to be about championing people who are different, so for her to select this one group of people who are obviously different and sort of deny their existence, it’s just…it’s really baffling.”

“I know she feels like she’s standing up for feminism but I don’t get it.”

JK made headlines over the summer months for her comments about the trans community, first voicing her frustrations over an article which said that “gender non-binary persons menstruate.”

Here’s how the Harry Potter stars reacted to her tweets…

Cynthia Nixon Says 'Sex and the City' Had 'Lot of the Failings of the Feminist Movement'

Cynthia Nixon is all smiles as she strikes a pose at the screening of her film Stray Dolls held during the 2019 Tribeca Film Festival at Village East Cinema on April 27, 2019 in New York City.

Ahead of the premiere, the 53-year-old actress looked back at her hit HBO series Sex and the City and opened up about what she would have changed.

“Well, I certainly think we would not have all been white, God forbid,” Cynthia expressed (via IndieWire). “One of the hardest things for me — it was at the time, too — is looking back and seeing how much of it centered around money, right? And how, Steve, my [character’s] husband, was like the closest we got to a working class guy, you know? Never mind a working class woman, right?”

“Also, I think we wouldn’t all look like that,” Cynthia added. “In terms of like, the perfection factor. In terms of always looking so incredible. And I know that’s the fantasy element, and in terms of the show that was important. But I think there’s a lot of ways that people can be visually compelling without looking — quote unquote — perfect.”

“There was so much debate when [Sex and the City] came out about whether it was a feminist show or not, which I always thought was stupid — of course it’s a feminist show,” Cynthia said. “But I think it has a lot of the failings of the feminist movement in it. In that it’s like white, moneyed ladies who are fighting for their empowerment. In a bit of a bubble.”
