The first teaser trailer for Steven Spielberg‘s remake of the classic musical West Side Story has arrived!

Ansel Elgort and newcomer Rachel Zegler star in the film as Tony and Maria alongside EGOT winner Rita Moreno as Valentina, who owns the corner store in which Tony works. The film tells the classic tale of fierce rivalries and young love in 1957 New York City.

For those that don’t know, Rita played the role of Anita in the original film and won an Oscar for her performance. Her role in the remake was created specifically for her!

We have all of the info that you need to know about the incredible cast, which includes some legendary names and some talented newcomers.

West Side Story was supposed to hit theaters in December 2020, but the release date was delayed until December 10, 2021 because of the pandemic.

The movie remake of West Side Story is one of the most anticipated films of the year and the first trailer is being released tonight during the Oscars!

The cast features some incredible actors who you probably know, as well as some rising stars who we expect to become household names in the future.

Steven Spielberg directed the movie, which was originally supposed to hit theaters in December 2020. The release date was delayed because of the pandemic and it will now be released on December 10, 2021.

Ariana DeBose & David Alvarez are hard at work on West Side Story!

The co-stars hit the streets for another dance scene on Saturday afternoon (July 27) in Harlem, New York.

For the scene, Ariana, who is playing Anita, donned a stunning yellow dress with a red underskirt. Meanwhile, David, who is portraying Bernardo, got into character in a black polo and beige pants.

Earlier this week, the film’s lead Ansel Elgort filmed a late-night scene with director Steven Spielberg.

West Side Story is set to hit theaters on December 18, 2020.

Ariana DeBose and David Alvarez are working on an iconic moment from West Side Story!

The co-stars were seen while shooting the film’s “America” scene on Friday afternoon (July 19) in New York City.

For the scene, Ariana, who is playing Anita, donned a stunning yellow dress with a red underskirt. Meanwhile, David, who is portraying Bernardo, got into character in a black polo and beige pants.

After a dramatic dance routine, the on-screen couple shared a kiss at the end of the scene.

Earlier in the month, we also got our first look at Mike Faist playing Riff while filming the “Jet Song” with his co-stars.

Ariana is best known for her Tony-nominated performance in the Broadway musical Summer. David previously won a Tony Award for playing the title role in the musical Billy Elliott.

The upcoming West Side Story movie from director Steven Spielberg has announced its core cast!

New Jersey High School student Rachel Zegler will star as Maria opposite Ansel Elgort in the role of Tony. Rachel won the role after auditioning against 30,000 other people around the world!

Broadway veterans Ariana DeBose and David Alvarez will star as Anita and Bernado, members of the Sharks. You may recognize Ariana from Hamilton and Summer: The Donna Summer Musical and you may recognize David from his work in Billy Elliot.

“I am so thrilled to be playing the iconic role of Maria alongside this amazing cast,” Rachel, 17, said in a statement to Deadline. She submitted for the role after seeing the casting notice on Twitter. “West Side Story was the first musical I encountered with a Latina lead character. As a Colombian-American, I am humbled by the opportunity to play a role that means so much to the Hispanic community.”

“I’m honored to follow in the footsteps of the remarkable women who have played Anita – including Chita Rivera and, of course, the incomparable Rita Moreno,” Ariana added in a statement. “I relate so strongly to Anita – a strong Puerto Rican woman who came to New York in search of opportunity – and I feel so fortunate for the chance to work with this amazing cast and creative team.”

Filming will reportedly begin this summer. The Leonard Bernstein musical was previously made into a movie in 1961 and has been on Broadway several times over the past decades.
