The Supremes‘ Diana Ross has released a statement about the death of Mary Wilson.

“I just woke up to this news , my condolences to you Mary’s family ,I am reminded that each day is a gift ,I have so many wonderful memories of our time together “The Supremes ” will live on ,in our hearts,” Diana, 76, posted on her Twitter account upon hearing the tragic news.

Mary passed away at the age of 76 on Monday (February 8) at her home in Las Vegas.

She was only 15-years-old when she started The Supremes with Diana and Florence Ballard. Ballard passed away in 1976 at the young age of 32.

It took Diana Ross a little while to realize that one of her most famous songs, “I’m Coming Out”, was a gay anthem.

According to producer Nile Rodgers, the now 76-year-old songstress thought the song’s lyrics meant something else entirely.

The track was born during one of Nile‘s visits to the bathroom of transgender nightclub GG’s Barnum Room in New York City, where he was surrounded by a lot of Diana Ross impersonators.

“All of a sudden a lightbulb goes off in my head,” he explained. “I had to go outside and call Bernard [Edwards, producer] from a telephone booth. I said, ‘Bernard, please write down the words: ‘I’m coming out.’ And then I explained the situation to him.”

Diana “immediately loved the song” and actually connected to the lyrics about someone breaking out of their shell.

“[She] didn’t understand that that was a gay thing, that that was a person saying, I’m coming out of the closet. She didn’t even get that.”

Now though, Diana fully embraces the meaning and celebrates what it means to the LGBTQ+ community.

The 47-year-old Black-ish actress attended Oprah Winfrey’s 2020 Vision: Your Life In Focus Tour, presented by WW, at American Airlines Center on Saturday (February 15) in Dallas, Texas.

During her appearance, she spoke about how she felt having her mother, Diana Ross, hear her sing professionally for the first time in upcoming film The High Note, out this May.

“This was one of the most beautiful moments of my life, I think…she came out of the house, came out of the garage, got in my car, closed the windows, and I was, like, okay. Here it is, mom. Here’s me,” she explained.

“You can imagine, you know, we all have fears. We all have these things that we’ve hidden away that we think are not worthy of coming forward. They might not be good enough. They might be compared to somebody else. And I had to realize that it’s not the sound of my voice, it’s the honesty of my voice that is the key. I’m not supposed to sound like my mom…I’m not even supposed to be her. I can’t fill her shoes. No one can fill her shoes.”

“I got her in the car and the first note happened…she pushed my arm and she turns to me and her face was covered in tears. And she said, ‘Finally.’”

Diana Ross is speaking out about an incident at the airport.

The 75-year-old “I’m Coming Out” music legend posted a series of updates on Twitter on Sunday (May 5) following her performance at the 2019 New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival in New Orleans, La.

“OK so on one hand I’m treated like royalty in New Orleans and at the airport I was treated like s–t,” she wrote.

“Let me be clear , Not the peiple or Delta BUT TSA , was over the top !! Makes me want to cry !!! Its not what was done but how , I am feeling violated – I still feel her hands between my legs , front and back ( saying to me it her job ,) WOW!!really mixed emotions I always like to see the good things but not feeling good right now.”

“Im feeling better , it took a minute,” she added hours later with a clip from her performance.

The tribute, hosted by Cedric the Entertainer and Smokey Robinson, airs at 8 p.m. on CBS.

The Ross family celebrated Diana Ross at her 75th birthday bash last night!

The family – including Diana herself – was seen arriving at Warwick nightclub on Tuesday evening (March 26) in Los Angeles.
