Eddie Murphy Opens Up About Being a Dad of 10

Eddie Murphy is talking parenting.

The 59-year-old Coming 2 America star got candid in an interview with The Mirror about his ten children, calling them the “center of everything.”

“I am going to be 60 in April and I have all these babies. I love fatherhood,” he explained.

“The whole idea of being out there and doing three movies a year, that s—t is over…I found over and over again and along the way I realized that if you put your children first you never make a bad decision,” he went on to say.

“When you hit a crossroads moment or you have got some s—t, you think, ‘Well, what is best for my children?’ If you go that route then you never make a bad decision,” he continued.

“I am so blessed with my kids. I don’t have one bad seed. I don’t have any like ‘Oh you are the one.’ I don’t have any of that. My kids are so great, normal people — and nobody is like the Hollywood jerk kid,” he went on to proudly say.

“My kids are smart and are trying to do stuff. I am blessed with my kids. I really, really got lucky.”

He and fiancee Paige Butcher welcomed their son Max in November of 2018. They also have a daughter, Izzy, 4. His oldest son Eric, with Paulette McNeely, is 31. He also has son Christian, 30, with Tamara Hood, and daughter Angel, 13, with Spice Girls member Mel B.

His five other children — daughters Bella, Zola, 21, Shayne, 26, Bria, 31, and Myles, 28 — are with ex-wife Nicole Mitchell Murphy.

Here’s why he stepped away from acting for nearly a decade.

Eddie Murphy Reveals Why He Stepped Away From Acting for Eight Years

Eddie Murphy is looking back at his career.

The 59-year-old actor opened up about taking a step back from acting on an episode of The Drew Barrymore Show on Friday (March 12).

Drew asked, “You had such a succession of these epic films, you know you were so young do you ever come down from those periods of time where you had hit after hit and you’re working?”

“I’ll tell you what happened to me,” Eddie replied. “I had it all the way together for years and years and years and then what happened with movies is they started offering you so much money to do stuff that I wound up doing, you know what that’s like, you’re just there and ‘You want to give me that much money to do that sh-t? Okay.’”

“I wound up doing a bunch of movies like that and it’s forever, like way after the money is spent that sh-itty movie is still playing on the movie channel,” he continued. “So I got to where I stopped having fun making movies, so I had to take a time, like 2011 I think it was, I stopped for like eight years, I stopped making movies and that’s when I had really, really quiet time and got re-centered. If I’m going to be doing something I want to be doing it because I want to do it. I got it all back together that way.”

Eddie also performed Drew‘s favorite Coming to America line, which you can watch in the clip below!

Drew recently discussed whether she had any plans to return to acting as well.

Eddie Murphy & Arsenio Hall Say They Were 'Forced' to Cast White Actor in Original 'Coming to America'

Eddie Murphy is opening up about one of his iconic movies.

On Monday (March 1), the 59-year-old actor and his collaborator Arsenio Hall promoted their upcoming movie Coming 2 America on Jimmy Kimmel Live!

During the interview, the two said they were “forced” by Paramount Pictures to cast a white actor in the original Coming to America, which was released back in 1988.

In the movie, Emmy-winner Louie Anderson was cast as Maurice.

“I love Louie, but I think we were forced to put Louie in it,” Arsenio told Jimmy. “We were forced to put in a white person.”

Eddie then chimed in, recalling Paramount execs allegedly insisting Coming to America not feature an all-Black cast.

“They were like, ‘There has to be a white person in the movie,’” Eddie recalled. “I was like, ‘What?’ So who was the funniest white guy around? We knew Louie was cool, so that’s how Louie got in the movie.”

Arsenio added, “It was official. I had a list. They gave me a list with three white guys. They said, ‘Who would you rather work with?’ I said ‘Louie.’”

Eddie, Arsenio, and Louie will all be reprising their roles for the Coming 2 America, which will be released on Amazon Prime Video on March 5. Check out the trailer here!

Here’s what he had to say…

On his comedy: “I was always funny…I was the guy digging in his nose, trying to get a booger off his finger. That was my killer bit.”

On the movie he wishes he was in: Ghostbusters. I was supposed to be in Ghostbusters. We were doing Trading Places and Dan Aykroyd was like [in a Dan Aykroyd voice], ‘This movie Ghostbusters…’ But then Beverly Hills Cop came along. I wish I could have been in both, but I did Beverly Hills Cop instead of Ghostbusters.”

On his guiding words: “Positivity, creativity, forward motion. Those three things pretty much cover everything. Whenever things get crazy, if you go back to that, you get grounded.”

On his secret talent: “No one’s ever seen me play piano. I started playing piano up at Saturday Night Live. There was a piano up there and Joe Piscopo showed me how to play ‘Let It Be,’ and for three years, that’s all I played. I could play the s–t out of ‘Let It Be’!”

Here's Why Eddie Murphy Passed On Ryan Coogler's 'Coming To America' Sequel Idea

Eddie Murphy is opening up about how Ryan Coogler pitched him an idea for another Coming 2 America sequel.

In an interview with The New York Times, the iconic actor revealed that Ryan’s idea for the movie was for “Michael B. Jordan to play my son and he would be looking for a wife.”

However, Ryan‘s idea was shot down: “I was like, then the movie would be about the son, it’s not our characters, we already did that. It didn’t come together.”

The first movie centered on Prince Akeem (played by Eddie) who searches for a wife who will love him in spite of his title.

Eddie did chat more about the movie’s legacy, and how “all this time passed and the movie became this cult thing.”

“Catchphrases from the movie start working their way into the culture. Stores turning themselves into McDowell’s [where Prince Akeem worked.] I see Beyoncé and Jay-Z dressed up like the Zamunda characters for Halloween.”

In the sequel with Eddie and Arsenio Hall returning, as they return to America – Queens in particular – to track down Akeem’s long lost son (Jermaine Fowler) so they can groom him to be the new crown prince.

Coming 2 America is set to premiere on Amazon Prime Video on March 5. See the new trailer here!
