Elle Fanning to Play Michelle Carter in Hulu Series About Texting Suicide Case

Elle Fanning will be starring in the upcoming Hulu series The Girl From Plainville, which is inspired by the true story of Michelle Carter and her controversial “texting-suicide” case.

Based off of the Esquire article of the same name by Jesse Barron, the limited series will explore Carter’s relationship with Conrad Roy III and the events that led to his death and, later, her controversial conviction of involuntary manslaughter.

Elle will serve as an executive producer on the project alongside writers and showrunners Liz Hannah (The Post) and Patrick Macmanus (Dr. Death).

This is Elle‘s second series for Hulu following The Great, which premiered earlier this year. That show was renewed for a second season last month.

'The Great' Renewed for Season 2 at Hulu!

Elle Fanning and Nicholas Hoult‘s hit show The Great has been renewed for a second season at Hulu.

The Great is a satirical, comedic drama about the rise of Catherine the Great from outsider to the longest reigning female ruler in Russia’s history. Season One is a fictionalized, fun and anachronistic story of an idealistic, romantic young girl, who arrives in Russia for an arranged marriage to the mercurial Emperor Peter. Hoping for love and sunshine, she finds instead a dangerous, depraved, backward world that she resolves to change. All she has to do is kill her husband, beat the church, baffle the military and get the court onside. A very modern story about the past which encompasses the many roles she played over her lifetime as lover, teacher, ruler, friend, and fighter.

THR reports that season two will contain 10 episodes.

Could There Be A Second Season of Hulu's 'The Great'? Elle Fanning Is Crossing Her Fingers!

The Great seems to a great hit on Hulu, after its’ premiere on Friday (May 15).

Now, star Elle Fanning, is opening up about a possible second season of the show.

The series centers on Catherine the Great, the longest-ruling female leader of Russia, who arrives in Russia only to find out that her husband, Emperor Peter (Nicholas Hoult), is an idiot.

Created by writer Tony McNamara, Elle told Entertainment Weekly that she’s crossing her fingers for a season two.

“There is a possibility, and it is open to having a second season,” she shared. “We can’t say that, we don’t know, but I definitely know that Tony is for sure thinking beyond [season 1]. He has more stories.”

Elle added, referencing the ending of the first season, “I did not think it was going to end this way either because I didn’t get all the scripts before. Tony was writing the scripts while we were filming, as we were going along, and so I think none of us really knew the endpoint.”

“I definitely thought it was going to be something different. So I was surprised by that. When we got the last script it was like, ‘Oh! Okay.’”

Elle continued, “I feel like season 2 would probably continue on this story. I don’t know exactly when it would pick up, but it would be us at this age. We have our fingers crossed.”

According to another report, The Great was pitched as a six season show.

Executive producer Marian Macgowan shared at the Winter TCA that “we initially pitched six seasons. So we believe there’s sufficient material to take us through until she is an old woman.”

Elle Fanning and Nicholas Hoult star in the series, centered on Catherine The Great as she arrives in Russia for an arranged marriage to the mercurial Emperor Peter.

I knew the she-had-sex-with-a-horse propaganda,” Elle, 22, recently told Variety about the historical figure she portrays on screen. “That’s what I knew about her, which is extremely sad. But I came to learn that she’s this kind of feminist icon, and she brought enlightenment to Russia and brought female education and art and science, and really did amazing things.”

She adds that playing the empress, is “quite fun.”

“PSA. #TheGreat is probably the best thing to come out on Hulu in a whhhhiiiillllleeeee,” one fan wrote about the series while watching.

Another adds, “The first time I’m going to stream-cheat on anyone (and it’s my grandma) but I genuinely need to watch #TheGreat it’s so impossibly good.”
