Golden Globe Nominee Emerald Fennell Opens Up About Being 7 Months Pregnant While Filming 'Promising Young Woman'

“I was so pregnant and I think that really helped because in general, I care deeply, pathetically what people think about me. I just chose the worst possible career in every way for that personality trait. The idea of people not liking me and thinking I’m difficult, all those things, is just dreadful to me,” she confessed.

“But luckily, when you’re carting around a massive baby and you’re about to give birth, you don’t have the time to be anxious. I was like a literal ticking time bomb, which I think gave me this weird power for myself,” she went on to say.

Emerald just got some amazing news that caused her to tweet “OH MY GODDDDDDDDDDDD” – and she’s already part of history! Find out why.

Golden Globes 2021 Nominations Include a Historic Amount of Female Directors

The 2021 Golden Globes are making long overdue history.

After being called out in years past for the lack of nominated women directors, the awards show recognized female filmmakers more than ever by nominating three women in the Best Director category: Chloe Zhao for Nomadland, Emerald Fennell for Promising Young Woman and Regina King for One Night in Miami.

The three directors will compete against David Fincher for Mank and Aaron Sorkin for The Trial of the Chicago 7.

It’s the first time that more than one woman has been recognized in the best director category at the Golden Globes. Previously, a woman had only been nominated seven times since the first ceremony was held in 1944.

“In Hollywood, female filmmakers are still vastly underrepresented. Women accounted for 16% of directors working on the 100 highest-grossing films in 2020, an improvement from the 12% in 2019 and the 4% in 2018. Yet it’s a sign that the entertainment industry falls far behind on gender parity,” Variety noted.

Chloe’s nomination also makes her the first woman of Asian descent to be nominated for best director, and Regina‘s nomination makes her the second Black woman to be nominated.

For now, Barbra Streisand is the only women to ever win the Golden Globe for best director.
