Emma Corrin Actually Had This Job On 'The Crown' Before Being Cast as Princess Diana

Emma Corrin was a breakout star in the new season of The Crown.

Casting director Robert Sterne opened up about the casting process for the hit Netflix series, and how he and his co-workers cast the show over multiple decades and seasons.

“It’s not only that you’ve got to find actors who can successfully embody real-life, well-known people, but you’ve got to make sure there’s a continuity as it’s passed from the younger to the older version of the actor,” he shared with Elle magazine. “Who’s done it before, who’s doing it after, and who are the real people?”

He continued, “It’s nerve-wracking because people invest in the original people. You do X hours of screen time with them and fall in love with their interpretation, and then you go again [and re-cast] every two years.”

One of the biggest casting deals was Diana, which ultimately went to Emma.

However, Robert explained that Emma was brought in a season earlier to be a reader, opposite the actresses who were auditioning for Camilla.

The tense lunch between Camilla Parker-Bowles (who is played by Emerald Fennell) and Diana in the third episode of season 4 was used as the audition scene.

“I usually read in all these meetings, but we decided because it was this major scene that we would get somebody to come in [for Diana],” he says. “We asked Emma to come in, not thinking about casting Diana at this point. But as she was reading with these Camillas, all the directors and the showrunner were looking more at her and not at the people playing Camilla—who will remain nameless, of course. When we got to thinking about Diana a year later, there she was in my notes.”

Emma stars opposite Josh O’Connor as Prince Charles in the current season.

Princess Diana will next be played by this actress in seasons five and six.

'The Crown' Stars Josh O'Connor & Emma Corrin Don't Think A Disclaimer Is Necessary For Netflix

Josh O’Connor and Emma Corrin are backing Netflix in their decision to not put a fictional disclaimer ahead of The Crown for viewers.

The proposition first started with the UK’s Culture Secretary Oliver Dowden, who suggested the program put a disclaimer ahead of each episode to alert viewers that the drama was in fact a fictionalization of the British Royal Family.

Helena Bonham-Carter, who played Princess Margaret in seasons three and four, backed his suggestion.

Now, the actors who play Prince Charles and Princess Diana, are speaking out on the controversy.

“We were slightly let down by our culture secretary, whose job it is to encourage culture,” Josh shared with the LA Times. “In my opinion, it’s pretty outrageous that he came out and said what he said. Particularly in this time when he knows that the arts are struggling and they’re on their knees, I think it’s a bit of a low blow.”

Josh added that viewers are aware The Crown is a work of fiction.

“My personal view is that audiences understand,” he shared. “You have to show them the respect and understand that they’re intelligent enough to see it for what it is, which is pure fiction.”

Emma also weighed in, telling Variety that “it is very clearly a dramatized version of events.”

“This is fictitious in the same way people don’t mistake Succession for what actually happened with the Murdochs,” she added. “I also understand [the request] comes from a place of sensitivity and protectiveness of the royal family and Diana.”

Recently, Emma opened up about what she’d do if she ever met Princes William and Harry.

Harry Styles Once Dog Sat For 'The Crown's Emma Corrin

Emma Corrin once had a very famous person dog sit for her!

During her appearance on The Tonight Show on Tuesday (November 17), the 24-year-old actress confirmed to host Jimmy Fallon that Harry Styles once took care of her dog while she had a business dinner to attend.

“Yea, sort of,” Emma confirmed when Jimmy asked if Harry was actually her dog walker. “He once dog sat for me.”

The Crown actress continued, “I love that my dog has no idea, which is wonderful. For a dog, it’s just a person.”

“I was having dinner near where he lives and he looked after Spencer for me,” Emma shared. “But he hasn’t done it again…I think it’s because halfway through the meal, I got a message that just said ‘He won’t stop farting. Is this normal?’”

Emma currently stars as the young Princess Diana in the new season of The Crown, streaming on Netflix now.

The Crown's Emma Corrin Talks Possibility of Meeting Princes William & Harry One Day

Emma Corrin is the breakout star of The Crown season four thanks to her work as the late Princess Diana.

In a new interview with GQ Hype, the 24-year-old actress was asked what she thinks Diana‘s sons Prince William and Prince Harry will think of the show.

“I can’t imagine,” Emma told the mag. “I’d be interested to know what they think,”

Emma has no interest in meeting the royals though. She said, “If I ever saw them at a party, I’d probably leave!”

Sadly, we’ll only get to see Emma in the one season of the series. “It’s a shame,” she said about her brief appearance. “I’m sad about it. But I’ve moved on…”

Emma Corrin Reveals She Was Hospitalized During Filming on 'The Crown' Season Four

Emma Corrin just revealed that while filming the recent season of The Crown, she was actually put in the hospital!

The 24-year-old actress opened up about the reason to Glamour (via) as she promoted the new season, which premieres on Netflix today.

Emma had fallen ill after spending two months in Spain, as she and Josh O’Connor, who plays Prince Charles, were recreating the couple’s 1983 tour of Australia.

“I’m asthmatic and had been ill for a while with a cough. I had to film a scene in a freezing-cold swimming pool. It was the hardest scene to film because I was genuinely keeping myself alive treading water,” she explained. “We were meant to be flying back that night to the UK and went past a hospital to get antibiotics.”

However, things didn’t work out as planned and “the doctors gave me an oxygen test and said, ‘We can’t let you go because your oxygen levels are so low,’ so I was hospitalized.”

Emma adds that she remembers “the nurses figuring out what I was filming and saying, ‘Would you like us to put a cardboard box over your head so no one recognizes you?’”

In another interview Emma and Josh revealed why this historic event wasn’t filmed and won’t be shown in the new season…

Charles & Diana's Royal Wedding Will Not Be Part Of 'The Crown' Season Four

Many fans of The Crown are looking to watch one big thing in the new season, which is premiering on Netflix this weekend – the royal wedding!

However, it looks like you won’t get to see the actual wedding.

Stars Emma Corrin and Josh O’Connor, who play Princess Diana and Prince Charles in the series, revealed just why the actual wedding was not filmed and won’t be shown.

“We never re-create things just for the sake of re-creating them,” Emma stated in a new interview with THR. “I think if we do re-create a scene — like the engagement scene, for instance, when they do the announcement — it has to be because it’s linked to something that the characters are going through. It has to be part of the story. It has to further the plot.

Emma added that the real wedding is actually available to watch online anyhow.

“You could be watching it in 10 seconds so I don’t think there’d be any point in us re-creating it.”

Josh adds, “That’s The Crown for you. That’s why The Crown is so good. Peter Morgan isn’t interested in showing you the wedding because, yeah, Emma’s right, you just go on YouTube and you can watch it.”

“I think all the historical events are important for punctuating so that the audience know where we are,” he explained. “He’ll put in Thatcher’s election, and that’s literally just to tell the audience, ‘Right, this is where we are,’ rather than putting up on the screen ’20th of December 1981,’ or whatever. He basically signposts it using historical events. But what’s more interesting, because Charles and Diana have to be a certain way on their wedding day, you don’t see the nuance; whereas when it’s behind closed doors, [like] the rehearsal, we have more license to create and fictionalize.”

The Crown season four premieres on Sunday, November 15.
