Fan Bingbing has been missing from the public eye for over three months and the Chinese government has provided an update on the case.

There have been rumors that the 37-year-old actress (who had a birthday two weeks ago) is in prison, though no official updates have yet been made on her whereabouts.

The Chinese government has confirmed through a report in the state-run media outlet Xinhua that Bingbing is facing an $86 million government fine, according to CNN. She also will have to pay unpaid taxes and fees amounting to $42 million. If she pays the nearly $130 million on time, she will not be prosecuted.

There has been speculation that Bingbing‘s disappearance is linked to a tax evasion scandal. An article on a state-run media outlet had said last month that she was brought “under control and about to receive legal judgment,” but the article was deleted.

Bingbing is best known to American audiences for her role in the X-Men franchise and she was set to begin work on the upcoming movie 355 alongside Jessica Chastain, Lupita Nyong’o, and Penelope Cruz.

There is speculation that Fan Bingbing, one of the most popular Chinese actresses in the world, is missing.

The 36-year-old actress was reportedly last seen in public on July 1 and she has been silent on social media since July 23.

THR reports that some of the theories spreading around social media are that Fan is “under the custody of Chinese authorites” and that “she has escaped to Los Angeles to seek asylum in the United States.”

Fan‘s name was brought into a tax evasion scandal in China after a TV host leaked documents that showed an unnamed movie star, who was identified online as Fan, was involved in an alleged tax-dodge scheme. Her reps have denied the allegations.

The Chinese government has reportedly been trying to crack down on the amount of money paid to celebrities as officials think the big paydays send the wrong message to young people.

Tabloids in China are taking shots at Fan and she was recently ranked last in the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences’ list of the most socially responsible stars in China. The list was made to determine which stars are a “strong role model” to fans and they gave Fan a score of zero.

Fan is scheduled to star in the upcoming movie 355 with Jessica Chastain, Penelope Cruz, and Lupita Nyong’o. She is best known to American audiences for her work in the X-Men movies.

Jessica and the ladies were also accompanied by the upcoming film’s director Simon Kinberg as they posed for photographs at a photo call for 355 as part of the 2018 Cannes Film Festival that same day.

All the women will play international spies in the movie, which is described to be in the style of other films like The Bourne Identity, Mission: Impossible and James Bond.

Cate Blanchett is defending the lack of female directors at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival, arguing that change will come, but “not overnight.”

“There are several women in competition, and they’re not there because of their gender, they’re there because of the quality of their work, and we’ll be assessing them as film-makers, as we should be,” the 48-year-old actress expressed at the opening-day jury press conference for the festival (via The Guardian).

“A few years ago there were only two [female directors in competition],” Cate added. “The selection committee now has more women on board than in previous years, which will obviously change the lens through which the films are chosen. But these things are not going to happen overnight.”

“Would I like to see more women in competition? Absolutely. Do I expect and hope that that’s going to happen in the future? I hope so,” Cate continued. “But we’re dealing with what we have this year, and our role in the next almost two weeks is to deal with what is in front of us.”

Jessica Chastain is teaming up with Marion Cotillard, Penelope Cruz, Fan Bingbing and Lupita Nyong’o for a spy thriller movie titles 355, described as a “large scale espionage film,” Deadline reports.

All the women will play international spies in the movie, which is described to be in the style of other films like The Bourne Identity, Mission: Impossible and James Bond.

Theresa Rebeck will write the script with Simon Kinberg set to direct. The hope is that the movie will become a franchise.

The Louis Vuitton fashion show in Paris, France was quite the star-studded affair!

In attendance at the big event on Tuesday afternoon (October 3) were Oscar winning actresses Cate Blanchett, Julianne Moore, Alicia Vikander and Jennifer Connelly with her husband Paul Bettany, as well as past nominees Michelle Williams and Ruth Negga.

Other stars in attendance include Léa Seydoux, Riley Keough, Catherine Deneuve, Fan Bingbing, Laura Harrier, and Raffey Cassidy.

The stars also all hit up a cocktail party the night before to celebrate the fashion brand.
