'Jane the Virgin' Creator Opens Up About Series Finale

WARNING: DO NOT KEEP READING IF YOU DO NOT WANT PLOT DETAILS SPOILED!

Jane the Virgin has officially come to an end.

After five seasons and 100 episodes, the Gina Rodriguez-led CW series has ended on Wednesday (July 31).

In the finale, Jane and Rafael finally tied the knot, Petra an JR finally reconciled, and Esteban proposed to Darci. It was also revealed that the narrator is a grown-up Matteo and the show is an adaption of Jane’s novel.

Show runner Snyder Urman opened up about the finale, and revealed that the show’s ending was exactly how she always pictured it.

“The ending of the show was the ending that I pitched in the room to the CW six years ago,” Sydney shared with Deadline.

Sydney then went on to explain how she chose Jane’s son Mateo as the narrator.

“I decided it was Mateo in the middle of the first season. So yes, after the voice was introduced,” Sydney shared. “That said, I don’t think the accent is a decoy; it’s part of the reveal. I wanted all the pieces to fit together and I wanted the reveal to add another layer to our meta-telenovela. The Narrator is Mateo putting on an accent because he is a celebrated voice-over artist. Much like the brilliant Anthony Mendez.”

As for where the characters go from here, Sydney doesn’t have anything else planned right now.

I don’t want to speak to any future developments,” Sydney added. “I want to leave the ending, as the ending… and everything beyond can exist in imagination.”
