Gossip Girl will be returning in a big way in 2021 with a new series on HBO Max and showrunner Joshua Safran wants to set something straight – it’s not a reboot!

After photos went viral this month from the set of the upcoming series, which filmed a scene on the iconic steps of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, everyone was calling it a reboot.

Safran spoke out to explain why the show is more of an “extension” than a “reboot.”

“Okay, I want to explain why I saw this is not a reboot,” he wrote on Instagram story. “A) The cast aren’t playing the original characters B) It exists in the same world as the original C) The same creators and one of the original writers are making it D) No one involved with it is calling it a reboot”

“Better Call Saul is not a reboot. The Power spin-offs are not reboots. This show falls somewhere between those two,” he continued. “But I’m just grateful people are intrigued enough to write about us!”

He’s also expressed on Twitter the reasoning for not calling it a reboot.

“I really wanted this to feel like an extension and in no way a reboot. So it’s an evolution of the story, not a retread. That said, there are echoes. Constance and St. Judes are still Constance and St. Judes, after all,” Joshua said in September. See more tweets below!

Jordan Alexander and Whitney Peak are hard at work filming Gossip Girl!

Jordan rocked a red dress and black leather jacket while filming with Whitney – in a shimmering orange dress – on Tuesday afternoon (November 17) in New York City.

Also seen on set was Eli Brown, who looked handsome in a dark orange suit paired with a maroon turtleneck as he filmed with his co-stars.

Later in the day, Jordan looked hot in a crop top and patent leather pants while filming another scene.

The day before, this fellow Gossip Girl star was seen baring his hot bod while wearing just a tiny pair of underwear!

Last week, a bunch of cast members were seen filming scenes on the steps of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the iconic landmark where so many scenes were filmed for the original show on The CW.

The new Gossip Girl extension series will premiere on HBO Max next year and it takes place eight years after the original show.

Thomas Doherty is braving the cooler weather is nothing but his underwear!

The 25-year-old actor wore just his Tom Ford underwear underneath his gold satin robe while heading to the set of Gossip Girl on Monday afternoon (November 16) in New York City.

Thomas tried to hold his robe close, however, the wind kept trying to blow it open and while walking to the set, he embraced it, showing off his toned abs and legs underneath the robe.

Later on in the day, Thomas was seen all dressed again, in jeans and a warm coat as he headed out to lunch with his co-stars Emily Alyn Lind and Evan Mock.

All three were masked up as they grabbed a bite to eat together before heading back to work on the HBO reboot of the iconic series.

Just last week, the full cast of the reboot got together for scene where they were seated on the steps of the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

This is a call back to the original show.

The cast of Gossip Girl were seen filming almost all together on Tuesday (November 10) in New York City.

Thomas Doherty, Tavi Gevinson, Eli Brown, Evan Mock, Jordan Alexander, Savannah Smith, Emily Alyn Lind and Zion Moreno all took to the steps of the Metropolitan Museum of Art for their scenes.

The week before, Eli and Whitney Peak were spotted filming scenes at night in the city.

The upcoming Gossip Girl reboot, which just started filming last week, recently added another new cast member in a Broadway star!

Gossip Girl will take place eight years after the original show, with a new generation of New York private school teens introduced to the social surveillance of Gossip Girl (voiced by Kristen Bell).

Showrunner Joshua Safran recently teased that the show is going to be “very, very queer” and that the main difference between the original series and the reboot is that the “majority” of the characters will be “diverse and/or queer.”

Not much is known about the characters on the Gossip Girl reboot, but Eli and Whitney are said to be part of the show’s “main trio,” according to Deadline.

Laura Benanti, who is best known for her Broadway career, is set to join the cast of the upcoming Gossip Girl sequel series!

The Tony-winning actress is joining the ensemble cast, though no details are known yet about her character, according to Deadline.

Among the young stars in the upcoming series are Emily Alyn Lind, Tavi Gevinson, Whitney Peak, Eli Brown, Johnathan Fernandez, and Thomas Doherty.

The ten-episode series will air on HBO Max and it was written by Joshua Safran. The “upcoming series features a new generation of New York private school teens introduced to the social surveillance of Gossip Girl. The series will address just how much social media and New York itself has changed in the intervening years.”

Laura will also be working with HBO Max on the upcoming scripted musical special, Homeschool Musical: Class of 2020, which will feature students from across the United States.

You might recognize Laura from her work on TV shows like Supergirl, Younger, and Nashville.
