5 Most Shocking Wins at Oscars 2019 - Biggest Upsets Revealed

There were some major upsets at the 2019 Academy Awards and it’s likely that a lot of people’s ballots had a few of the night’s winners wrong.

Green Book took home the award for Best Picture and two other awards, surprising many who thought that the Netflix movie Roma would make history as the first film from a streaming service to win the prize.

Glenn Close was the clear favorite to win the award for Best Actress, though the award went to The Favourite‘s Olivia Colman.

'Green Book' Wins Best Picture at Oscars 2019!

Green Book is the big winner at the 2019 Academy Awards!

The film directed by Peter Farrelly took home the top honor on Sunday (February 24) at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles.

The film starred Viggo Mortensen, Mahershala Ali, and Linda Cardellini and follows an African-American pianist who gets driven around the country while on tour by an Italian-American.

Green Book also took home the award for Best Original Screenplay while star Mahershala won Best Supporting Actor.

Mahershala Ali Wins Best Supporting Actor at Critics' Choice Awards 2019!

Mahershala Ali accepts his award on stage at the 2019 Critics’ Choice Awards on Sunday (January 13) at the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, Calif.

The 44-year-old actor won the award for Best Supporting Actor for his work in Green Book and he brought musician Kris Bowers on stage.

Kris did the music for the movie and also was Mahershala‘s piano double!

Also stepping out for the event were Mahershala‘s Green Book co-stars Viggo Mortensen (nominated for Best Actor) and Linda Cardellini, as well as nominated director and writer Peter Farrelly.

FYI: Linda is wearing a Zuhair Murad gown, Stuart Weitzman shoes, Beth Miller jewelry, and a Tyler Ellis bag. Mahershala is wearing Berluti.

'Green Book' Writer Nick Vallelonga Apologizes for Anti-Muslim Tweet

Nick Vallelonga is speaking out to apologize for an anti-Muslim tweet he wrote in 2015.

The Green Book writer, and real-life son of the movie’s subject Tony Lip, won two Golden Globes over the weekend for his work on the film.

Vallelonga replied to Donald Trump‘s claim about 9/11 on Twitter and said he saw “Muslims in Jersey City cheering when towers went down.”

“I want to apologize,” Vallelonga said in a statement this week. “I spent my life trying to bring this story of overcoming differences and finding common ground to the screen, and I am incredibly sorry to everyone associated with Green Book.”

“I especially deeply apologize to the brilliant and kind Mahershala Ali, and all member of the Muslim faith, for the hurt I have caused,” he continued. “I am also sorry to my late father who changed so much from Dr. Shirley’s friendship and I promise this lesson is not lost on me. Green Book; is a story about love, acceptance and overcoming barriers, and I will do better.”

Mahershala won Best Supporting Actor at the Globes this weekend.

Viggo Mortensen's 'Green Book' Character's Real-Life Son Joins Him at NBR Awards!

Viggo Mortensen is joined by Nick Vallelonga on the red carpet at the 2019 National Board of Review Awards Gala on Tuesday (January 8) at Cipriani in New York City.

The 60-year-old actor portrays Tony Lip, Nick‘s father, in the movie Green Book.

Nick co-wrote the movie with Brian Currie and they were at the event to accept the Best Film Award. Viggo won Best Actor for his work in the movie!

Linda Cardellini, who played Viggo‘s wife, also was at the event.
