Ian McKellen Recalls Elliot Page Being Soft Spoken on 'X-Men' Set Before Coming Out As Transgender

Ian McKellen is opening up about what he thought about Elliot Page coming out as transgender.

If you don’t recall, Ian and Elliot starred together in X-Men: The Last Stand, as Magneto and Kitty Pryde.

“Everything gets better [when you come out because you get self-confidence],” Ian told Attitude magazine. “You get better in terms of relationships, friends of all sorts, family, if you’re lucky. And in my case, I think in every case, your acting is bound to change and improve.”

Ian, who has been openly gay since the 1980s, recalled his relationship with Elliot.

“I remember Elliot Page, in one of the X-Men [movies], sat as close as we are now. And I had to speak when they’d finished, and I couldn’t hear what they were saying,” Ian shared of one of the moments on set. “Nobody could hear what they were saying. So, I said, ‘Look, if you can’t speak up, would you mind when you’re finished speaking, just dropping your hand so I know when you’ve finished speaking?’”

“Then they came out [as gay] years later and suddenly you couldn’t stop them talking. You heard everything. Now…they’re Elliot. And I’m so happy for Elliot, and so disappointed in myself that I didn’t detect what their difficulty was with communicating,” he added.

Elliot, who goes by he/him pronouns, has been getting lots of support from fans and friends in the industry.

Sir Ian McKellen has revealed that he received the COVID-19 vaccine!

The 81-year-old Lord of the Rings actor was given the first of two doses at London’s Queen Mary’s University Hospital on Wednesday (December 16), the Evening Standard reports.

“It’s a very special day, I feel euphoric,” Ian said after receiving the vaccine.

“Anyone who has lived as long as I have is alive because they have had previous vaccinations,” Ian continued, “the take up amongst the older generation will be 100 percent — it ought to be — because you’re having it not just for yourself but for people who you are close to — you’re doing your bit for society.”

Ian said that he feels “very lucky to have had the vaccine,” and is encourage others to get it.

“Of course, it’s painless,” Ian said of the shot. “It’s convenient, and getting in touch and meeting NHS staff and saying thank you to them for how hard they’ve been working is a bonus, I would have no hesitation in recommending it to anyone.”

The Unite Kingdom became the first country to roll out the COVID vaccine earlier this month.

Earlier this week, it was revealed that this British celeb baker also received the vaccine.

The FDA recently approved the coronavirus vaccine by Pfizer in the United States.

The stream was in support of No Kid Hungry.

“We all know the implications of COVID-19 are far reaching, but we may not realize how school closures and economic stressors are significantly increasing childhood hunger rates in the U.S. The problem is two-fold as new financial strains make it harder for families to provide meals for their kids and food access programs that previously provided in-school meals need to quickly shift the way they operate. To help address this crisis, we humbly ask you to support No Kid Hungry, a national campaign focused on ending childhood hunger in America,” Josh wrote.

Ian McKellen Opens Up About His Decision to Stay Closeted Most of His Life

Ian McKellen is getting candid about his decision to remain closeted most of his life.

The 80-year-old Lord of The Rings actor didn’t come out as a gay man until he was 49.

In a new biography, Ian McKellen: A Biography, Ian explained the choice had to do with homosexuality being criminalized in England for a majority of his life.

He added that he was also concerned how it would impact his career.

“Would audiences take his acting seriously, as Romeo for instance, if they knew that in real life he fancied Mercutio rather than Juliet?” biography author Gary O’Connor wrote (via People).

But in 1988, Ian announced his sexuality during a debate on a radio broadcast when the interviewer said something derogatory about gay people.

Gary added, “He had left the dark closet of secrecy for self-exposure and liberation. This galvanized him, energised him in a direction he had never thought himself capable of. Identified now as a chaste, never promiscuous, completely dedicated general and leader of men, as an activist he displayed an inner mobilisation of force and direction of power in the social, political field.”

Ian has gone on to champion equality and protection for the LGBTQ community, writing articles, fundraising for nonprofits and serving as a founding member of Stonewall U.K.
