Game of Thrones' Iwan Rheon Talks About the Worst Day of His Career

Iwan Rheon is opening up about the day he filmed Ramsey’s rape of Sansa Stark on the HBO series Game of Thrones, which he says was the worst day of his career.

The scene is one of the most controversial ones in GoT history.

“That was horrible. Nobody wanted to be there. Nobody wants to do that, but if it’s telling a story then you have to tell it truthfully,” Iwan told Metro. “They didn’t sensationalize it or anything. It was very, very hard watching. It’s a horrible thing that happens, unfortunately… It was the worst day of my career.”

Iwan added, “Chopping someone’s finger off you don’t really see it, and when you’re doing like a close up, it’s a piece of plastic. We’re just acting, it’s not real. Then something like that where you’re in the actual reality of the situation is very difficult to deal with. It was a horrible, horrible day. This is something that we shouldn’t even have to worry about, because it’s something that shouldn’t exist in this world but unfortunately it does.”

Sophie Turner, who played Sansa Stark, spoke out about how she was affected by playing the role.

“Initially, I didn’t feel there was anything that stayed with me from all the things Sansa went through. But though I think it hasn’t affected me emotionally, I did start thinking about the domestic abuse and rape, and it spurred this little part of me that might be an activist,” she told Harper’s Bazaar last year.

Serinda Swan Responds to Medusa Wig Criticism at 'Inhumans' TCA Panel

The cast of Marvel’s Inhumans take the stage at the 2017 Summer Television Critics Association Press Tour held at the Beverly Hilton on Sunday (August 6) in Beverly Hills, Calif.

In attendance at the panel were stars Serinda Swan, Ellen Woglom, Anson Mount, and Iwan Rheon, as well as executive producers Scott Buck and Jeph Loeb.

At the panel, Serinda, who plays Medusa in the show, defended the wig that she wore in the first previews, which received a lot of criticism.

“It’s never been done before,” she said, via The Wrap. “So there’s going to be issues and there’s going to be trials and tribulations. The CGI … there was software that had to be built for it.”

“If we only did things that were perfect, we would never start. And so it’s a really phenomenal start,” she continued. “This is still a work in progress… We’re coming down to the wire on some of the special effects.”

Iwan Rheon Explains His Gruesome 'Game of Thrones' Death Scene on 'Jimmy Kimmel Live' - Watch Here!

Iwan Rheon made an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live on Wednesday (August 2) to promote Marvel’s new series Inhumans, but of course the topic of conversation turned to – what else? – his dramatic Game of Thrones exit.

The 32-year-old Welsh actor described how the memorable scene where he got eaten by his own dogs came to pass. “It was the last scene I did, so I did suspect they’d actually let it happen for real,” Iwan told Jimmy about. “Realistically, I wasn’t anywhere near any dogs.”

“I walked in, and I saw the dogs, and I think it was a couple of seasons previous, it was the same dogs, I was like, ‘hi doggy!’ and they were like, don’t look the dog in the eye!” Iwan continued, “They’re not like pets, they’re guard dogs, they’re trained to be vicious, really, and they only listen to their owner, so if you have eye contact with them they take that as a direct threat. So I wasn’t allowed to be anywhere near these dogs.”

Iwan revealed that the scene that aired was all CGI. There may have been one shot where there’s an actual dog behind him in a cage.
