Jennie Garth Says She Learned How To Be Competitive With Other Girls From Her '90210' Days

Jennie Garth is looking back at her time starring as Kelly Taylor on Beverly Hills, 90210, and revealed that one of the biggest things she learned from the set was how to compete with other girls.

During her podcast with former co-star and friend Tori Spelling, the 49-year-old actress shared that she still struggles with it.

“I think as a young girl…[the show] brought out a super competitive part of me being in that environment of being judged because of my looks or how I looked in an outfit,” Jennie shared on the episode.

She added that “It was just a different day and age and it gave us young girls a lot of mixed messages. I, for many years, struggled with [it].”

Jennie also admitted that she felt “threatened” by her costars at the time.

“If I’m honest, I think [the show] kind of taught me to be threatened by other girls be threatened by other women [and] be more competitive because I wanted our costars approval or attention,” Jennie said. “It messed with me on a deeper level and not until later in life that I kind of think it wasn’t ever about the other girls, and why did I ever make the other girls an enemy in my mind?”

She continued, “I think that Tori and I are always working through those messages as we grow older and trying to be better people and figure it all out.”

'90210' Cast Reacts To Jessica Alba's Claims There Was a No Eye Contact Rule on Set

Jessica Alba‘s comments about her experience on the set of Beverly Hills, 90210 caused quite a stir with the original cast of the show.

Jennie Garth, Tori Spelling, Jason Priestley and Ian Ziering have all spoken out about it after hearing that she had been instructed not to make eye contact with them during her guest appearance on the show.

Speaking with Access Hollywood, Ian shared that he couldn’t “for the life of me ever imagine a situation where any of the actors would ever say that.”

While he acknowledged that the no eye contact rule might’ve come from an assistant director or someone else outside of the cast, he also said that “none of my cast mates ever requested anything like that.”

“I’m not doubting that was her experience,” Ian said. “It saddens me because it lessened the experience for her—certainly didn’t slow her down in life—but it’s hard to hear that there was any negativity on the set…If I had known about that I would have shot that down immediately… I didn’t even work with her that day but I would’ve went right over to her and said, ‘How are you doing?’”

Jason echoed Ian‘s statements.

“Don’t look at the stars of the show was never an edict that came down on our show. I don’t know who told Jessica Alba not to look at us. None of us on that show thought we were MC Hammer,” he said during his own appearance on The Roz & Mocha Show on KiSS 92.5.

Jason went on, “Apparently somebody did because they thought that was a thing to do. I don’t know what Jessica Alba’s experience was coming on our show as a guest star. I know that certainly I never would have made her feel that way. I always went out of my way to make sure that our guests always felt incredibly welcome. I would always go and talk to them and make sure they knew that this was a place where we wanted them to succeed because I’d been on enough sets as a guest star and I always appreciated it when the regulars on the set came and made me feel that way.”

Jennie Garth & Dave Abrams Reveal How They Saved Their Marriage After Split

Jennie Garth is opening up about her 10-month split from husband Dave Abrams.

The 47-year-old actress, who reconciled with Dave earlier this year, says the time apart helped them grow.

“We definitely had to part ways completely. We needed that time to grow,” Jennie told People.

“I found out that he filed for divorce from TMZ…The [possibility of a third divorce] really devastated me. I was in a really bad mindset for a good five or six months. It was just embarrassing. And it made the accepting of it so much harder,” Jennie said.

She continued, “But when I finally did accept, like, we’re breaking up, I had to tell myself, Dave is not an option. Because I kept wanting it. And then, just when I felt whole again, we started hanging out. We both had separate learning to do, and then coming back and sharing that growth was kind of the fiber that connected us back together like, ‘I see you differently now.’”

While Jennie and Dave are now happily back together, she added, “It’s very easy to go back to those old ways. So it’s a process and it’s continuously wanting to better the relationship.”
