‘Raya & the Last Dragon’ Debuts at No. 1 at the Box Office

Raya and the Last Dragon is No. 1!

The Disney film opened bringing in an estimated $8.6 million during its first weekend at the box office, THR reported Sunday (March 7).

The film's soft landing was "likely due to the refusal of several key chains — including giant Cinemark Theatres — to carry the fantasy-adventure. That's because they wanted more generous terms since Raya debuted simultaneously on Disney+ for $30," according to the outlet.

Overseas, Raya and the Last Dragon opened to $17.6 million from 32 markets for a global total of $26.2 million.

The movie takes us on an exciting, epic journey to the fantasy world of Kumandra, where Raya, a lone warrior, must track down the legendary last dragon to stop an evil force that has returned after 500 years to once again threaten her homeworld. Find out who voices each role!

Here’s Why Disney Replaced the Original ‘Raya & The Last Dragon’ Actress with Kelly Marie Tran

Did you know that Kelly Marie Tran wasn't the original choice to play Raya in the new Disney film Raya and the Last Dragon?

Disney originally announced that Degrassi actress Cassie Steele would be playing the role and she even made an appearance on stage at D23 in 2019 alongside Awkwafina and the film's creative team. (See photos from that event in the gallery)

Not much was heard about the project for a full year after that appearance, but then news broke that Kelly would be replacing Cassie in the movie.

The film's producer Osnat Shurer recently spoke about what led to the casting change.

Kelly Marie Tran Opens Up About Racist & Misogynist Bullying She Faced After ‘Star Wars’

Kelly Marie Tran isn't holding back.

The 32-year-old actress is getting candid about the bullying she faced after being cast in 2017's Star Wars: The Last Jedi, which resulted in criticism that caused her to eventually delete social media and withdraw from public life, which she discussed in an essay for the New York Times.

She is now speaking out about the experience in conversation with THR, explaining that the experience felt like she "fell in love very publicly and then very publicly had an embarrassingly horrible breakup."

"If someone doesn't understand me or my experience, it shouldn't be my place to have to internalize their misogyny or racism or all of the above," she said of what she learned in therapy after the harassment.

"Maybe they just don't have the imagination to understand that there are different types of people living in the world."

"What's interesting to me about working in this industry is that certain things become so public, even if you don't really mean them to be, [like] the succession of events in which I left the internet for my own sanity...it was basically me being like, 'Oh, this isn't good for my mental health. I'm obviously going to leave this.'"

"I left. I said no to a lot of things. It felt like I was just hearing the voice of my agents and my publicity team and all of these people telling me what to say and what to do and how to feel. And I realized, I didn't know how I felt anymore. And I didn't remember why I was in this in the first place," she said.

"Any time that happens, I have to close up shop and go away for a while and really interact in the real world — read books and journal and go on hikes and look at a tree and remind myself that there was a fire that burned inside of me before Star Wars, before any of this. And I needed to find that again."

She also explained how she recorded her Raya dialogue amid the pandemic.

Kelly Marie Tran Explains How She Recorded ‘Raya’ Dialogue During the Pandemic

Kelly Marie Tran looks like a real-life princess while sitting down for an interview on Jimmy Kimmel Live to talk about playing a Disney princess.

The 32-year-old actress, who is best known for playing Rose Tico in the Star Wars movies, opened up about her new animated movie Raya and the Last Dragon.

Kelly filmed the movie in the middle of the pandemic and revealed that all of her dialogue was actually recorded at her home.

"I recorded in a makeshift fort at my boyfriend's apartment, which was made of sound blankets taped to the wall with duct tape. Glamorous! I remember there were days when there was construction happening, my internet was cutting out, there was always something going on," she said.

The movie will be in theaters and on Disney+ Premier Access on March 5.

FYI: Kelly is wearing a Michael Cinco dress.
