HBO Max Explains Samantha Jones' Absence From 'Sex & The City' Spinoff

Casey Bloys, HBO Max‘s chief content officer, is opening up about the upcoming Sex and the City spinoff, And Just Like That….

Just a few weeks after the spinoff was announced by star Sarah Jessica Parker, Casey is opening up about how the show will address Samantha Jones’ absence.

“They’re not trying to say that these characters are reliving their 30s. It is very much a story about women in their 50s, and they are dealing with things that people deal with in their 50s,” he noted with press during a panel event on Wednesday (February 10).

Casey added that just like “in real life, people come into your life, people leave. Friendships fade, and new friendships start.”

“So I think it is all very indicative of the real stages, the actual stages of life…They’re trying to tell an honest story about being a woman in her 50s in New York. So it should all feel somewhat organic, and the friends that you have when you’re 30, you may not have when you’re 50.”

Kim Cattrall, who played Samantha on the original HBO show, seemingly reacted to the show’s announcement. Here’s what happened…

Meanwhile, Sarah has opened up about just who or what the fourth character is.

This Is the Only Reaction Kim Cattrall Has Issued to the 'Sex & the City' Revival News

Some backstory: In 2017, Kim revealed that she was never friends with her co-stars and the relationships on set felt “toxic.” She also revealed she wouldn’t do a third film with them. Then, months later in early 2018, Kim‘s brother suddenly passed away and Sarah Jessica wrote a comment on Kim‘s Instagram post, expressing her condolences and seemingly, mending their broken relationship. Later on, Kim suddenly lashed out at SJP for “exploiting” her family’s tragedy. Kim was rumored to be the reason why a third Sex and the City movie never came to fruition.

Kim Cattrall Opens Up About Leaving 'Sex And The City' After Reboot Rumors Were Revealed

Kim Cattrall won’t be returning to HBO Max’s possible Sex and the City reboot, and in a new interview is opening up about how she feels lucky to walk away from her iconic role as Samantha.

In years past, the 64-year-old actress, spoke out about her time on the show and her co-stars.

In this new interview for the Women’s Prize for Fiction podcast, Kim shared that after revealing just how miserable she was on the set, she got a lot of backlash for her comments.

“It was a lot of fun and I loved it and being in new territory is always exciting. I felt like we were,” she said of the groundbreaking series. “Walking away, even if it’s the only thing to do, you always feel, it’s a bit of shame, I think. The taste of shame and you have to let go of that. You don’t want to become that caged bird.”

Kim notes that the backlash that still thinks about are the comments from fans who thought she should swallow any negative experiences and just learn to deal with it.

“I remember getting a lot of grief on social media for not wanting to do a film. It was astonishing some of the things people wrote to me — ‘I work in a bank and I don’t like this person and I don’t like the hours, but I do it. So you just do it!’” she shared. “Give me what I want. I do it. I’m miserable, you be miserable too.”

Kim added, “I’m lucky enough to have the choice, not that I haven’t worked for it. I have. It’s something I feel very lucky to have and I’m very protective of it. I wouldn’t be any good doing something that I really didn’t want to do.”

Last year, Kim made headlines after saying she’d never return to the role of Samantha for a reboot of the show or film. Before that, she opened up about having toxic relationships with her co-stars, Sarah Jessica Parker, Cynthia Nixon and Kristin Davis.
