A New ‘Law & Order' Spinoff Picked Up By NBC; Will Focus On The Defense

The Law & Order franchise is expanding again!

Deadline reports that NBC has given a series order to Law & Order: For The Defense, which will bring the focus of the law to the defense’s side and dive deep into a criminal defense firm.

The series will put the lawyers under the microscope, along with the criminal justice system, with every week delivering the promise of a contemporary morality tale.

Creator Dick Wolf shared in a statement, saying that “this new show is exciting for me personally. We spent the last 30 years on shows that played offense.”

He added, “Now it will be great to play defense, and being able to do it with Carol is an honor and an opportunity for both of us to do television that hasn’t been done before.”

Carol Menselsohn will serve as the show’s showrunner.

The Law & Order franchise has included six spinoffs from the original show: Law & Order: Criminal Intent, Law & Order: Trial By Jury, Law & Order: LA, Law & Order: True Crime, Law & Order: SVU, and the most recent, Law & Order: Organized Crime with Christopher Meloni.

Here's How Christopher Meloni Describes Stabler & Benson's Reunion On 'Law & Order'

Christopher Meloni is opening up about what fans are most looking forward to in his return to Law & Order – Elliot Stabler and Olivia Benson’s reunion.

However, what he has to say isn’t the happiest news.

During an interview TV Line to promote Law & Order: Organized Crime and the crossover event with SVU, Christopher revealed that Stabler and his former partner will have a difficult time reconnecting.

“Well, this is what I think about that: No one’s going to be satisfied,” he shared. “I mean, it’s such a long time. It is so many unanswered questions.”

Christopher went on, adding that there’s “such a great sense of abandonment and betrayal and a what-the-f**ed-ness of it all, that, you know, that wound is, you know, not going to…get its dressings all, you know, squared away. You know, it’s going to be a process, right?”

You can see the first teaser that NBC dropped which reveals the shock for Olivia of his return.

Elsewhere in the interview, Christopher reveals that his return comes with a bit of weight for fans and he knows it.

“It’s such a unique experience I’m living, which is a sense of welcoming and love and just, ‘Welcome back’ and ‘We’ve missed you.’ It feels very sweet. And I’m just going, man, not too many people get this,” he shared. “It’s not lost on me.”

Christopher Meloni Had No Idea 'Law & Order' Fans Still Loved Stabler As Much As They Did

Christopher Meloni is a little shocked that Law & Order viewers are really excited about Elliot Stabler’s return.

The 59-year-old actor is set to return as the iconic detective in a new spinoff titled Organized Crime, which premieres next Thursday, April 1.

“I have felt nothing but goodwill and anticipation and I am so humbled and shocked by it,” Christopher shared during his appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon this week. “I just had no idea. I didn’t realize the character and the show resonated so deeply with people. It’s very sweet.”

Law & Order: Organized Crime centers on Stabler as he returns to the NYPD to battle organized crime after a devastating personal loss. However, the city and police department have changed dramatically in the decade he’s been away, and he must adapt to a criminal justice system in the midst of its own moment of reckoning.

Christopher also opened up about reunited with his SVU castmates, who he starred with for years before leaving the franchise.

“It’s such a cliché … I got on the stage of the SVU set and it has changed. They have different actors and it’s not my house, it’s not my place, so I had no connection. But as soon as I got to act with Mariska [Hargitay], it was like yesterday,” he says.

“We know each other and mess around socially and all that, but when we got down and cameras were rolling … it was such a seamless, effortless endeavour. It was great.”

Here’s one of the teasers for his return:

What Will Happen to Stabler's Family in the 'Law & Order: Organized Crime' Spinoff?

New details about the role Stabler’s family will play in the the upcoming Law & Order: Organized Crime spinoff have surfaced!

The new series will premiere on NBC on April 1 and starts with being an SVU crossover at 9/8c before the new spinoff airs at 10/9c.

According to TVLine, Isabel Gillies (who played Elliot’s wife, Kathy), Allison Siko (who played his daughter, Kathleen), and Jeffrey Scaperrotta (who played his son, Dickie) have all been cast in the SVU half of the event.

However, it doesn’t seem like things will be smooth sailing for the Stablers. The logline for the show says that Elliot Stabler returns to the NYPD after experiencing a “devastating personal loss” and will follow his attempts to rebuild his life as part of a new elite task force, implying that something tragic may happen within the family.

In an episode of the show’s official podcast, showrunner Warren Leight said that the original finale for Season 21 revolved around the family as well.

“We were going to see Kathy Stabler come back, very upset — her son has been rolled by a team of ne’er-do-wells and may have been drugged,” Warren said.

While that finale was scrapped when the COVID-19 shutdown interrupted production, the logline for the show suggests that something really huge might go down during the SVU half of the two-hour crossover.

Christopher Meloni originally hinted that fans would get to see a different side of Stabler in the new show last July.

Christopher Meloni's 'Law & Order' Spinoff Gets Official Premiere Date

NBC has set a date when Christopher Meloni will return as Elliot Stabler to the Law & Order television franchise.

The network announced today that Law & Order: Organized Crime will make its debut on April 1.

Christopher‘s Elliot will reunite with Olivia Benson in a crossover event on SVU, which will air at 9/8c, before the new spinoff airing at 10/9c.

Organized Crime will focus on the detective as he’s reeling from a “personal loss” and rejoins the NYPD to lead an elite task force that will take on organized crime.

There, he finds that the system and the city don’t look the same as they did in his decade-long absence, though, and “he must adapt to a criminal justice system in the midst of its own moment of reckoning.”
