Liam Neeson Battles Bad Guys On A Frozen Lake in 'The Ice Road'

Liam Neeson is back on screen battling the bad guys in the first trailer and images for Netflix’s The Ice Road.

Here’s a summary of the film: After a remote diamond mine collapses in far northern Canada, a ‘big-rig’ ice road driver must lead an impossible rescue mission over a frozen ocean to save the trapped miners.

Contending with thawing waters and a massive storm, they discover the real threat is one they never saw coming.

Laurence Fishburne, Benjamin Walker, Amber Midthunder and Marcus Thomas also star in the film.

Speaking with EW, Liam revealed that they shot the movie on Lake Winnepeg when it had frozen over.

“It’s inspired by the French film, Wages of Fear, which is this classic French black-and-white movie,” he told the magazine. “Our film is set on frozen Lake Winnipeg, where there’s been a collapse up in the mine in Northern Canada and there’s miners trapped. Because of the weather, the only way they can transport the pieces used to extract the miners is by road and these big trucks across Lake Winnipeg.”

He added, “The only thing is it’s the dead of winter, and the ice is usually eight-to-ten-feet thick, but in ours the thaw is happening so the ice is only three feet thick — and so s*** happens.”

The Ice Road will premiere on June 25 on Netflix.

Liam Neeson Will Personally Greet NYC Moviegoers Who See His New Movie in Theaters

Liam Neeson is excited for New York City movie theaters to re-open and he will personally be at a theater on Friday night (March 4) to welcome moviegoers seeing his new film.

The 68-year-old actor’s movie The Marksman will be playing at the AMC Lincoln Square theater and he will be at an evening showing on Friday to greet moviegoers before the film begins.

“This is one for the diary,” Liam told THR. “It will be nice to welcome people. I think going to the cinema is a bit of a sacred experience. I’ve felt that way since I was a kid.”

The Marksman has been playing in theaters since January 15 and it has grossed over $16 million worldwide so far, though it still hasn’t played in many key markets like New York City. The movie follows a rancher on the Arizona border who becomes the unlikely defender of a young Mexican boy desperately fleeing the cartel assassins who’ve pursued him into the U.S.

“The reopening of New York is a strong symbolic gesture to the theater-going audience that it is okay to put your toe in the water,” said Tom Ortenberg, chief of Open Road/Briarcliff, the film’s U.S. distributor.

In the movie, Liam is an Arizona rancher and former Marine who rescues a young boy from the clutches of a Mexican cartel.

The film earned $2.03 million for a running total for $6.09 million, according to the latest report.

Deadline also pointed out what’s happening with major movies amid the pandemic, and how that’s affecting theaters and release dates: “The major studios ran for the hills again, just like they did after the release of Tenet, pushing their Q1 titles seeing the bluesy Christmas results of Wonder Woman 1984 and News of the World. Yes, as we told you, this was to be expected in Q1 given how the virus is lingering despite the deployment of the current vaccine…scientists at Columbia University estimate that we’re bound to get 158M total infections if the current restrictions we have in the U.S. stay in place until late July. This could mean we go through another cycle of release date changes, and push theatrical further into the fall. We’ll see.”

Liam Neeson is leaving the action genre behind.

The 68-year-old actor confirmed that he sees an end to his career run with action movies in an interview with ET.

“Oh, yeah. I think so. I’m 68 and a half. 69 this year. There’s a couple more I’m going to do this year — hopefully, COVID allowing us — there’s a couple in the pipeline and, then I think that will probably be it. Well, unless I’m on a Zimmer frame or something,” he explained during the interview.

“I love doing ‘em. I love beating up guys half my age,” he added, going on to talk about an experience on the set of upcoming film Blacklight.

“I’ve just finished one in Australia and I had a fight scene with a kid — lovely, sweet actor called Taylor — and halfway through the fight I looked up, I was breathless and it didn’t cost him a cent, and I said, ‘Taylor, what age are you?’ He said, ’25.’ I said, ‘That’s the age of my eldest son!’”

He previously said he’s done with superhero movies as well, although fans are campaigning for him to play Zeus from Clash of the Titans in Wonder Woman 3.

“I guess so, sure. I mean, I’m very flattered! I wasn’t aware that the ancient Greek gods appeared in Wonder Woman. I have to say, much to my chagrin, I haven’t seen kind of the Wonder Woman movies…I’ll call my agent!” he said.
