Mabel Gets Candid About Dealing With 'Crippling' Depression & Anxiety

Mabel is on the cover of Glamour UK‘s August 2019 digital issue, out now.

Here’s what the 23-year-old “Don’t Call Me Up” singer had to say…

On her severe depression as a child: ā€œI got to about six years old when my parents realized it was cripplingā€¦thatā€™s when music came into it and I started playing piano and journaling. I feel so lucky because I grew up with parents who understand it. They would listen to all my anxieties. Talking about it stopped me from catastrophising. They didnā€™t see it as a negative I needed to get rid of.ā€

On how her anxiety has ultimately made her into a stronger person: ā€œWhen I wrote my song, ‘OK,’ last year, I woke up and it was a really bad day and I realized I had three options: I could cancel my session or pretend Iā€™m fine. Or, I could go and tell everyone how Iā€™m feeling because thereā€™s nothing embarrassing about having anxiety. Those are the magical moments where Iā€™m glad Iā€™ve gone through what I have. I can turn them into music that will make other people feel less alone.ā€

On female music artists today: ā€œThere is definitely more love and support between women than there ever has been. The sense of competition between Christina or Britney or BeyoncĆ© – thatā€™s not a thing anymore. Weā€™re standing together in a different way.ā€
