Mary J. Blige Opens Up About The Pain That Fueled Her 'My Life' Documentary Ahead of the Premiere

Mary J. Blige stuns in a silver dress as she arrives at the premiere of her documentary, Mary J. Blige’s My Life, held at the Rose Theater at Lincoln Center on Wednesday night (June 23) in New York City.

The 50-year-old singer walked the black carpet with director Vanessa Roth ahead of the screening of the pic, which will premiere on Amazon Prime Video on Friday, June 25.

Speaking to ET about the documentary, Mary opened up about why it was important to reflect on the dark parts of her upbringing.

“To go back and actually show them [fans] where the pain came from, it was heavy, but it was nothing because those are my fans. In order to do a My Life documentary, you have to go back and show people what happened, you know? Why it happened and where did all this pain come from,” she shared.

Mary added, “Just speaking about all of that and how my mother was single and she was trying to raise us and she was being hurt. And she was in pain. And we all was in pain, but we were trying to survive without everyone knowing we were in pain.”

In the trailer for her new Amazon Prime documentary Mary J. Blige: My Life, the 50-year-old entertainer admitted that when she was working on her 1994 album My Life, there was a point that she “didn’t want to live” anymore.

Mary J. Blige Reflects on Her Influential Album 'My Life' in the Trailer for Her New Documentary - Watch Here!

Mary J. Blige is looking back at some of the defining moments of her career in the trailer for her upcoming documentary, Mary J. Blige’s My Life.

Amazon Prime Video released the first look at their new documentary on Tuesday (June 1), which features the singer reflecting on her critically acclaimed 1994 album My Life.

According to an official summary for the film, “the singer, producer and actress reveals the demons and blessings that inspired the record and propelled her from the soul-crushing world of New York’s housing projects to international stardom.”

Mary celebrates the 25th anniversary of My Life by performing it live for first time in the documentary, which also features interviews from Taraji P. Henson and Alicia Keys.

The movie is directed by Oscar-winning filmmaker Vannessa Roth with Sean “Diddy” Combs producing the project alongside Mary. Quincy Jones is acting as the the executive music producer on the project.

Mary J. Blige’s My Life is set to stream on Amazon Prime Video on June 25.

The 50-year-old singer looked gorgeous in a green and black jumpsuit while attending her induction ceremony on Friday morning (May 28) in New York City.

“It means everything. I mean the Apollo is the most important thing to our culture as African-American artists. If it wasn’t for the Apollo, we wouldn’t have a chance. People wouldn’t have gotten discovered,” she said at the ceremony.

“This was the first place I made it, you know, before Madison Square Garden,” she added. “This is it. Without the Apollo, there is no recognizing of Mary J. Blige.”

Jennifer Hudson Brings Aretha Franklin's Story To Life in 'Respect' Trailer - Watch!

Jennifer Hudson becomes the Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin, in the brand new trailer for Respect.

Here’s a synopsis of the highly anticipated movie: “Following the rise of Aretha Franklin’s career from a child singing in her father’s church’s choir to her international superstardom, Respect is the remarkable true story of the music icon’s journey to find her voice.”

Jennifer is joined in the movie by Forest Whitaker, Marlon Wayans, Audra McDonald, Marc Maron, Tituss Burgess, Kimberly Scott, Saycon Sengbloh, Hailey Kilgore, Heather Headley, Skye Dakota Turner, Tate Donovan and Mary J. Blige.

Respect, directed by Liesl Tommy, had been delayed in its debut due to the pandemic.

It will now premiere in theaters on August 11.

If you didn’t know, one of Jennifer‘s former co-stars also played Aretha in a limited series.

Mary J. Blige is opening up.

The Grammy Award-winner made an appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show via video chat on Tuesday (February 23).

During her appearance, Mary revealed that she cried when she turned 50 last month.

“When it hit at 12 o’clock that night, I just cried like a baby because I made it. I’ve been through hell in my life. And to make it to 50, it was just beautiful,” she explained.

She also revealed she recently listened to her old music for the first time and talked about how her lyrics helped her during quarantine, as well as divulging that she will be releasing new music “real, real, real soon” and how she knows Vice President Harris is a true fan of hers.

“What blew me away is, like, you know, so many of the lyrics was helping me now during the quarantine and in my life. And what I couldn’t understand was how could somebody so messed up that was, you know, drinking and on drugs and just a crazy person, you know, young person write those lyrics that can help me through everything that I’m going through right now. It’s like listening to another person, especially during the time we were all just, you know, suffering in the quarantine and in this pandemic, you know?” she said of her early music.

She also got nominated for a massive honor!

Rock & Roll Hall of Fame 2021 Nominees - Full List Revealed!

The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame has announced their 2021 nominees!

The prestigious museum has revealed the names of the 16 contenders in the running to be inducted into the museum.

This year’s nominees include Mary J. Blige, Jay-Z, Foo Fighters, and Dionne Warwick among many others.

For consideration, acts must have released their first commercial work at least 25 years ago.

Fans can vote at rockhall.com or at the Hall of Fame in Cleveland now through April 30, 2021. The top five fan-voted artists will be tallied along with other ballots selecting the inductees.

The inductees will officially be announced in May with The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame 2021 Induction Ceremony taking place in Cleveland, Ohio in the fall.
