Demi Lovato Reveals Why She Was 'Fooled' During Engagement to Max Ehrich

Demi Lovato is speaking out about her broken engagement to Max Ehrich and how she had herself “fooled” during the relationship.

The couple met during the pandemic and got engaged after just a few months of dating, but they called off the engagement two months later.

“I really had myself fooled, because it was the safe and expected thing,” Demi said in a new interview with Entertainment Weekly. “Obviously I cared deeply about the person, but there was something inside of me that was like, ‘I have to prove to the world that I’m okay.’ Now that I’m not engaged or married and I’m okay, I’m like, ‘Wow. Isn’t that so much more empowering?’ It’s not this false sense of security.”

The outlet reports that Demi then put her face into her hands before continuing the answer.

She then said, “Also, the size of that ring, it made it really real. The second it was off, I was like, ‘You know what? I’m good. I don’t need that.’ I just don’t need an object on my finger to make me feel like I’ve got my s— together. It looks like stability, but it doesn’t mean that it is. And I don’t actually grow through stability. I find that I like living not in chaos or crisis, but in fluidity. It’s not [being] stuck and stagnant in an ideal or a tradition that was placed upon us by the patriarchy.”

In her new docu-series, Demi talked about the drugs she was using before her overdose in 2018.

Demi Lovato Reveals the Reasons Why She & Max Ehrich Split

Demi Lovato is revealing what went wrong in her relationship with Max Ehrich after the two started dating and got engaged in 2020, before breaking up.

“Honestly, what happened? I think I rushed into something that I thought was what I was supposed to do,” she said in her new docu-series, Dancing With the Devil, airing March 23 on YouTube. “I realized as time went on that I didn’t actually know the person that I was engaged to.”

Demi then said the relationship was “false advertising” and the quarantine accelerated the pace of their romance.

“It’s just, like, of course that accelerated. I didn’t even have my best friends to hang out with in quarantine,” she commented. “The hardest part of the breakup was mourning the person I thought he was.”

About Max‘s response to the breakup, Demi had thoughts.

After their split, Max claimed Demi used him and their split as a PR stunt and Demi fired back and said Max would not leave her alone.

He also claimed he found out about their breakup from the tabloids.

“I mean, I was just as shocked as the rest of the world at some of the things that were said and done,” Demi continued.

“I feel like I’m actually too queer to marry a man in my life right now,” she added. “I’m not willing to put a label on it right this second, and I think I will get there, but there’s a lot of things that I have to do for myself first. I want to allow myself the ability to live my life in the most authentic form possible.”

Demi Lovato Took Ending Her Engagement to Max Ehrich as a 'Huge Sign' About Her Sexuality

Demi Lovato is opening up about the end of her engagement to Max Ehrich and took it as a “huge sign” about her sexuality.

“When I started getting older, I started realizing how queer I really am,” Demi told Glamour, who noted she was “beaming” while talking. “This past year I was engaged to a man, and when it didn’t work, I was like, This is a huge sign. I thought I was going to spend my life with someone. Now that I wasn’t going to, I felt this sense of relief that I could live my truth.”

Max and Demi got engaged after dating for a short period but called things off in September of 2020.

Demi added she feels “too queer” to be with a cis man.

“I hooked up with a girl and was like, ‘I like this a lot more.’ It felt better. It felt right,” she added. “Some of the guys I was hanging out with—when it would come time to be sexual or intimate, I would have this kind of visceral reaction. Like, ‘I just don’t want to put my mouth there.’ It wasn’t even based on the person it was with. I just found myself really appreciating the friendships of those people more than the romance, and I didn’t want the romance from anybody of the opposite sex.”

As for when she’ll define her sexuality, Demi said, “I know who I am and what I am, but I’m just waiting until a specific timeline to come out to the world as what I am. I’m following my healers’ timeline, and I’m using this time to really study and educate myself on my journey and what I’m preparing to do.”

After their split, Max claimed Demi used him and their split as a PR stunt and Demi fired back and said Max would not leave her alone.

Demi Lovato's Ex Max Ehrich Accuses Her of Using Their Split for Clout

Max Ehrich is making some claims about his relationship with Demi Lovato.

The 29-year-old The Young & The Restless actor accused her of using their split for clout in her Instagram comments on Thursday (November 19).

Max commented on one of Demi‘s recent posts showing off her new hair, as well as her 2020 People’s Choice Awards opening monologue, where she joked about the short engagement.

“I went into lockdown mode, and got engaged. I got into painting, photography, meditation, tested the limits of post mates unlimited. Also, I didn’t know this could happen, but reached the end of Instagram four times. I binged seven seasons of Pretty Little Liars, got unengaged, then went looking for aliens in the desert,” she said during the monologue.

“Stop talking about me on award shows. Thanks,” Max wrote, “exploiting our breakup for clout at PCA is not chill.”

Back in October, Max went on Instagram and went on about his ex and their breakup, and accused her of using their breakup to boost sales for her new song, “Still Have Me.”
