Michael Douglas and his son Cameron Douglas are getting candid about Cameron‘s drug addiction and recovery process.
The 75-year-old Basic Instinct actor and the 40-year-old Loaded star shared their thoughts in a new cover interview with People.
Cameron has abused cocaine and heroin – sometimes undergoing drug-induced seizures – and in his 20s, he carried a gun and dealt methamphetamines to support his habit.
“I hated the wreckage I saw in my life because of drugs, but I just couldn’t stop,” Cameron told the outlet.
“There were moments when hope dwindled… and then it’s just a train out of the station,” Michael Douglas said. “Life became a series of crises. I thought I was going to lose him.”
“It’s the sneaky power, the stranglehold that addiction has when you’re in the throes of it,” Cameron continued. “When you get that far down the rabbit hole, there are a couple options: there’s prison and then there’s death.”
Following a DEA sting operation in 2009, Cameron was sentenced to five years in prison for conspiracy to distribute meth and cocaine. He spent almost eight years behind bars, as the sentence was extended for possession while he was imprisoned.
Cameron was released in 2016 and is now raising his 22-month-old daughter Lua with his longtime girlfriend Viviane Thiebes. He is working on starting up his acting career again is grateful for the constant love and support from his family.
