Michael Sheen Reveals Why He Gave Back His Most Excellent Order of the British Empire

Michael Sheen is finally revealing why he returned his Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (OBE) give to him by Queen Elizabeth back in 2009.

Michael, who was born in Wales, “learnt a lot about Welsh history” while researching to give the prestigious Raymond Williams lecture. While doing research, he delved into the “tortured history” between Wales and England.

“By the time I’d finished writing that lecture, I remember sitting there going: ‘Well, I have a choice. I either don’t give this lecture and hold on to my OBE or I give this lecture and I have to give my OBE back’,” Michael told Guardian columnist Owen Jones. He is also calling for the title of the “Prince of Wales” to stop being given to the heir to the British throne.

Prince Charles currently holds the title and Michael said it would be “really meaningful and powerful gesture for that title to no longer be held in the same way as it has before, that would be an incredibly meaningful thing I think to happen.” According to the Guardian, “English king Edward I created and gave [that title] to his son in 1301 as part of his subjugation of the Welsh principalities.”

Michael added, “I didn’t mean any disrespect but I just realized I’d be a hypocrite if I said the things I was going to say in the lecture about the nature of the relationship between Wales and the British state.”

We’ve included photos of Michael receiving the honor at Buckingham Palace on June 2, 2009 with his daughter Lily and partner at the time, ballet dancer Lorraine Stewart. (If you don’t know, find out who Lily’s famous mom is!)

Michael Sheen Reveals What Was 'Difficult' About Kate Beckinsale Split

Michael Sheen is speaking out about the most difficult aspect of his 2003 split from his ex Kate Beckinsale. The couple were together for 8 years and have a child, Lily, who is now 21.

“Going through that experience of a relationship breaking down and having a young child, and then because of my daughter and her mom living in another country, having to make a life in a new place whilst going through that whole experience, which is difficult enough,” Michael said on the “Changes With Annie Macmanus” podcast about having to live in the UK while his daughter was in the USA. “I had no work visa to stay in America, so every time I left, I had to go back to Britain. I never knew if I would be allowed to come back in again.”

He continued, “So, I ended up having to get work in Britain because I wasn’t really getting any work in America. It really made me question certain things about myself.”

Kate and Michael have remained on good terms over the years, and she has even featured him on her social media!

Tom Payne On Understanding Serial Killers in 'Prodigal Son': 'It's An Endless Riddle'!

Michael Sheen, Bellamy Young, Tom Payne and Lou Diamond Phillips all got together to attend their SAG-AFTRA Foundation conversation panel for their series Prodigal Son held at The Robin Williams Center on Sunday (December 15) in New York City.

Tom, 36, and his co-stars sat down for a panel discussion following a screening of the show.

In the hit Fox series, Payne plays the son of a serial killer (Sheen) who draws on his knowledge to help the New York Police Department solve crimes and stop killers.

“It’s a never-ending riddle. It’s never one thing that (triggers the killing). It’s a variety of things. Generally, there’s anger and pain involved,” Tom expressed. “The human condition is endlessly fascinating. Everyone is seemingly born as a blank canvas and then ends up being a fully formed person. How much of that is nurture and how much is nature?”

“I was in the (series’) writers’ room and they had a book that was literally an encyclopedia of serial killers,” Tom continued. “You learn there is no common thread. The reason Ted Bundy is so fascinating is he was a well-put-together guy, an attractive man, intelligent and yet he did all these terrible things. It’s an endless riddle.”
