Second Director Says Harvey Weinstein Blacklisted Mira Sorvino From Appearing in Film

Following Peter Jackson‘s recent interview, in which he said he believed he was unknowingly part of a “smear campaign” by Harvey and Bob Weinstein to prevent Mira Sorvino and Ashley Judd from being cast in Lord Of The Rings, a second director is now stepping forward to agree with those suspicions.

Terry Zwigoff, the director of 2003 comedy Bad Santa, tweeted on Saturday (December 16) that he was interested in casting Mira – but the Weinstein Company allegedly hung up on him when he proposed the idea.

“I was interested in casting Mira Sorvino in BAD SANTA, but every time I mentioned her over the phone to the Weinsteins, I’d hear a CLICK. What type of person just hangs up on you like that?! I guess we all know what type of person now. I’m really sorry Mira,” he wrote.

After Harvey issued a statement denying Peter‘s telling of the story, Peter responded with a lengthy statement of his own.

Peter Jackson Responds to Harvey Weinstein's Denial of 'Lord of the Rings' Casting Story

Peter Jackson has released a lengthy statement in response to Harvey Weinstein‘s denial of blacklisting Ashley Judd and Mira Sorvino during the Lord of the Rings casting process.

The Weinstein brothers were involved with the fantasy franchise when their studio Miramax was helping develop the films. The studio didn’t end up green-lighting the movie and the franchise moved to New Line, where the final decisions were made.

Harvey‘s rep claims that he had no input on casting as “all casting was done by New Line.”

Peter says that during his initial conversations with Weinstein, he brought up Ashley and Mira as possibly casting choices and he was told to “steer clear” of them “because they claimed to have had ‘bad experiences’ with these particular actresses in the past.”

“This type of comment is not unusual – it can happen with any studio on any film, when different actor’s names come up in conversation – but once you hear negative feedback about somebody, you don’t forget it,” Peter said in his statement to Deadline. He added, “The movies changed hands from Miramax to New Line before casting actually got underway – but because we had been warned off Ashley and Mira by Miramax, and we were naive enough to assume we’d been told the truth, Fran [Walsh] and I did not raise their names in New Line casting conversations.”

Harvey Weinstein Responds to Peter Jackson Claiming He Was 'Fed False Information' About Ashley Judd & Mira Sorvino

Harvey Weinstein is responding to Peter Jackson‘s belief that he was “fed false information” about Ashley Judd and Mira Sorvino, leading him to not cast them in Lord Of The Rings.

Representatives for Harvey issued a statement on Friday (December 15): “Mr. Weinstein has nothing but the utmost respect for Peter Jackson. However, as Mr. Jackson will probably remember, because Disney would not finance the Lord of the Rings, Miramax lost the project and all casting was done by New Line. While Bob and Harvey Weinstein were executive producers of the film they had no input into the casting whatsoever,” the statement reads, via Entertainment Weekly.

“Secondly, until Ashley Judd wrote a piece for Variety two years ago, no one at the Company knew that she had a complaint and she was cast in two other films by Mr. Weinstein [Frida and Crossing Over] and Mira Sorvino was always considered for other films as well. There was no indication that Mira Sorvino had any issues until Mr. Weinstein read about the complaints in the news,” the statement continues.

“As recently as this year, Mira Sorvino called Mr. Weinstein and asked if her husband could be part of the SEAL television series [Six] he was producing and Mr. Weinstein cast him; when Christopher Backus received a better offer, Mr. Weinstein allowed him to amicably break his contact to peruse the opportunity.”

Peter Jackson Confirms Ashley Judd & Mira Sorvino's Claims of Being Blacklisted From 'Lord Of The Rings' by Harvey Weinstein

Peter Jackson is opening up about Harvey Weinstein, as well as realizing that he was led to believe false information about Ashley Judd and Mira Sorvino.

The Lord Of The Rings director told Stuff that while in talks to produce Rings with Harvey‘s company Miramax, he expressed interest in casting both actresses.

“I recall Miramax telling us they were a nightmare to work with and we should avoid them at all costs. This was probably in 1998,” he said.

While he didn’t have reason to doubt the recommendation not to cast them at the time, he now feels it was likely a “smear campaign in full swing.”

“I now suspect we were fed false information about both of these talented women – and as a direct result their names were removed from our casting list,” he said.

Both Ashley and Mira have since responded on Twitter.

“Just seeing this after I awoke, I burst out crying. There it is, confirmation that Harvey Weinstein derailed my career, something I suspected but was unsure. Thank you Peter Jackson for being honest. I’m just heartsick,” said Mira.

“I remember this well,” wrote Ashley while retweeting the story.
