Naomi Campbell Opens Up About Being Token Black Model: 'It Was Uncomfortable'

Naomi Campbell and Demi Moore happily strike a pose while attending the WSJ. Magazine at WSJ Tech Live at The Montage Laguna Beach on Tuesday (October 22) in Laguna Beach, Calif.

The 49-year-old supermodel and the 56-year-old actress were joined at the event by Chief Executive Officer of Disney, Robert Iger, as they all sat down for their very own panel discussions.

During her panel, Naomi recalled being the token black model early on in her career and tokenism in the industry today.

“I’m not gonna call people out and I have to believe that everybody is coming from a good place,” Naomi expressed at the panel (via E! News). “We’ll discover as we go along—we will know who is doing it for the token and who is doing it for real.”

“I know what it’s like to be the token and it wasn’t a good feeling to have to always be the only black model in a show of 70 girls,” Naomi Campbell continued. “It was uncomfortable. I didn’t like it. So, if I said no, there’d be none. It was a rock between a hard place.”

FYI: Demi is wearing Salvatore Ferragamo. Naomi is wearing Alexander McQueen.

Naomi Campbell Opens Up About Her Eccentric Habits

Naomi Campbell is on the cover of WSJ. Magazine‘s October 2019 issue, out on October 12.

On addiction: “I’m a survivor. I don’t have a squeaky-clean life, and I don’t pretend to. I was the first to say that I was an addict, and I’m so grateful to God to be a recovering addict and a recovering alcoholic.”

On managing her image and maintaining privacy: “The good thing with me is that you’d see me and you wouldn’t see me: I’d appear and I’d disappear. Traveling has saved my life in a certain way—I keep it very limited to who knows what [I’m doing] and where I’m going.”

On her eccentric habits (one recently example showed Naomi giving a tutorial on her over the top disinfecting routine for air travel): “If I lose something I look at it as it was meant to be gone. Don’t look for it. It was meant to leave. I believe if things fall off me…and I find it, I don’t put it back on my body…I’m very superstitious when someone gives me something to put on my body. I look at the reason behind it.”
