Naomi Osaka Wins Australian Open, Shares Funny Moment with Jennifer Brady in Post-Win Speech

Naomi Osaka is a champion again!

The 23-year-old tennis player won the women’s singles final of the 2021 Australian Open on Saturday (February 20) at Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne, Australia.

Naomi, who is from Japan, defeated American player Jennifer Brady in straight sets, 6-4 and 6-3.

During her post-win speech, Naomi had an awkward moment with Jennifer when she asked her opponent what she likes to be called.

“Firstly, I want to congratulate… Do you like to be called Jenny or Jennifer?” she said while turning to her opponent. Even though she clearly responded with “Jenny,” Naomi continued by saying the opposite.

“Firstly, I want to congratulate Jennifer. We played in the semis of the US Open, so a couple of months ago I told everyone that would listen that you’re going to be a problem. And I was right,” Naomi said.

Naomi Osaka Opens Up About Being Labeled 'Shy' & Speaking Out Against Injustice

Naomi Osaka is on the cover of Vogue‘s January 2021 issue, out now.

Here’s what the 23-year-old tennis star had to say…

On being labeled “shy”: “That shy label has stuck with me through the ups and downs of my career, but I think people who have watched me grow would say that I navigate situations better, that I’m better able to express myself.

On becoming increasingly outspoken about racial injustice: “I feel like this is something that was building up in me for a while. I watched the Trayvon [Martin] stuff go down. For me that was super-scary. I travel so much during the year that I don’t always know the news that’s centered in the U.S. But then when the pandemic hit, there were no distractions. I was forced to look.”

On joining protests amid Black Lives Matter rallies: “I don’t think it matters if you’re shy or not, or if you’re introverted or extroverted. You’re just there in the moment. When you see it in real life—so many cameras filming everyone, police with guns outside the city hall, the parents of other victims telling their stories—it kind of hits you differently. You’re able to process it on your own terms.”

On wearing masks at the U.S. Open bearing the names of Black American victims of violence: “I was just thinking that I had this opportunity to raise awareness. Tennis is watched all around the world, so people who might not know these names can google them and learn their stories. That was a big motivator for me, and I think it helped me win the tournament.”

Naomi defeated Victoria Azarenka, 1-6, 6-3, 5-3. This Naomi‘s second win at the U.S. Open and her third Grand Slam win.

Throughout the tournament, Naomi arrived at all of her matches wearing a face mask with the name of a Black person who was killed at the hands of police. In past matches, she wore masks with George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, and Trayvon Martin‘s names on them.

For her final match, she wore a mask with Tamir Rice‘s name on it, who was a 12-year-old boy shot and killed in Cleveland by a white police officer in 2014.

After her match, ESPN’s Tom Rinaldi asked Naomi what message she was trying to send with the masks.

“Well, what was the message that you got? This is more of the question,” Naomi said. “I feel like the point is to make people start talking.”

Naomi‘s boyfriend rapper YBN Cordae was spotted in the stands cheering her on, while wearing a “Defund the Police” T-shirt.

Congrats on your win, Naomi!
