Neil Patrick Harris Reveals What He Thinks Of The Female Led 'Doogie Howser' Reboot

Neil Patrick Harris is excited for the Doogie Howser reboot!

The 47-year-old actor opened up about the upcoming Disney+ series, titled Doogie Kamealoha, M.D., which will reimagine the original early 1990s television show.

Set in modern-day Hawaii, the 10-episode comedy follows Lahela “Doogie” Kameāloha (Peyton Elizabeth Lee), a mixed-race 16-year-old girl, juggling a budding medical career and life as a teenager.

Guiding Lahela (and also complicating things) is her family, including her spitfire Irish mother (Kathleen Rose Perkins) who’s also her supervisor at the hospital, and her “Local Boy” father (Jason Scott Lee) who struggles to accept that his daughter is no longer his little girl.

Speaking during an interview with Variety, Neil revealed that he’s looking forward to the series, seemingly giving his stamp of approval.

“I’m so happy,” he shared. “The creator of it was a big producer on ‘How I Met Your Mother’ (Kourtney Kang). I think setting it with a female protagonist is a great call… I think it’s in really good hands.”

Neil added that he feels “like it’s a passion project for many and I can’t wait to watch it.”

Production on the series is expected to start later this year.

Neil Patrick Harris Explains Why He's Okay with Straight Actors Playing Gay Roles

There has been an ongoing debate for years on whether straight actors should be playing gay roles and now Neil Patrick Harris is sharing his thoughts.

The 47-year-old actor, who is openly gay in real life, has played both straight and gay characters throughout his career.

One of Neil‘s most famous roles, Barney on How I Met Your Mother, was a straight character.

“I think there’s something sexy about casting a straight actor to play a gay role — if they’re willing to invest a lot into it,” Neil said in a new interview with The Times. “I played a character for nine years who was nothing like me. I would definitely want to hire the best actor.”

He added, “In our world that we live in you can’t really as a director demand that [an actor be gay or straight]. Who’s to determine how gay someone is?”

Kristen Stewart, who is also openly gay, recently shared her thoughts as well after her movie Happiest Season was released in November.

Drew Barrymore Says Neil Patrick Harris' Husband David Burtka Gave Her Life-Changing Advice on Flying with Kids

Drew Barrymore is opening up about the life-changing advice that she received from Neil Patrick Harris‘ husband David Burtka.

Neil was a guest on The Drew Barrymore Show on Wednesday (December 9) and David popped in for a few minutes of the virtual interview.

Drew revealed that she was once on a flight with David when her kids were acting out. He gave her some advice that changed her life forever.

David, I really just have to say thank you again because you are so near and dear to my heart. I had a really bad flight with my kids, they were both acting out, you know 2-years-old and 3-years-old, and you are always that person on the plane just so horrified you are the one ruining everyone else’s flight,” Drew said. “And you told me, you were like, ‘I’ve been through it too, this is normal, you are doing a good job. It’s okay, try to take the stress out of your body. People aren’t as upset as you probably are projecting that they are.’”

Drew continued, “And you changed my life that day because I flew with my children everywhere all the time, I took them all over the place. And you changed flying for me because I was always so stressed and embarrassed. So thank you.”

David replied, “I’m so happy because we’ve all been there. We’ve had that crying child and you think you’re so horrified that you have this crying child that everybody is looking at you. I’m so glad you got through it. You did it with ease.”

“You contributed to one parent that was really freaking out and it’s just hard to be a parent with two kids and you just want to make it okay for everyone else and weirdly not many people are making it okay for you in that moment and that’s what you did and I will never forget it for the rest of my life, and in fact I will always pay it forward,” Drew said in response.
