Emilia Clarke's 'Game of Thrones' Co-Star Nikolaj Coster-Waldau Calls Her Rape Scene 'Degrading'

Emilia Clarke‘s character Daenerys Targaryen is raped in season one of Game of Thrones by her husband Khal Drogo (Jason Momoa) and her co-star Nikolaj Coster-Waldau is now speaking out about the controversial scene.

In the books, the scene is actually written as consensual, but the pilot episode clearly features a sexual assault.

“For Emilia to play that in Series One was really tough and degrading, because what that character goes through is horrific,” he told the Times of London. “She’s sold to a guy who rapes her, but her way of getting through that is a massive journey, right?”

“Cersei, too, was never looked upon as an equal to her brother just because of gender. But then she rises to the top,” he added. “And you could argue that the way those two women turned out was because of being raised in this horrific way.”

When asked if he was surprised that some fans wanted a more dramatic death for Jaime, he said: “I didn’t follow it at all. [Pauses.] Obviously, I heard about it.”

“I was aware of the petition for a new ending, which I thought was hilarious. I almost wanted to donate to that petition. HBO saying, ‘You’re right, so many people want it, we’re going to do it.’ I think everyone had their own opinion. I find the world of fandom really interesting. Everyone wanted something specific and different from what they got. It’s a combination of — you imagine an ending; but also, I think if you’re a hardcore fan, it was really upsetting that it ended. You lived with this for eight seasons. There is still a massive community dedicated to Game of Thrones. I think there was a real fear that was going to go away. It had to end.”

When asked if he would do anything differently with the ending, he said: “Oh, how did it end? He was — no, it was fine. It was great. It was fine. How do you end that story? Let’s talk about this in 10 years, then you can talk about it. But now, I think it’s a little too recent.”
