Noah Baumbach Reacts to Popular ‘Marriage Story’ Memes on ‘Fallon’ – Watch Here!

Noah Baumbach made an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on Thursday night (December 19) and dished all about the success of his critically acclaimed film, Marriage Story!

"I guess it's nothing but downhill from here," the 50-year-old writer-director joked after Jimmy praised him for all his success.

Jimmy then has Noah respond to some of the most popular memes inspired by Marriage Story and it's leading stars, Scarlett Johansson and Adam Driver.

After watching one that featured Scarlett's dancing scene, Noah responded: "A friend of mine who is an older filmmaker, once said to me that if you're in this business long enough that every weird thing happens to you. It just did!"

Greta Gerwig & Noah Baumbach Open Up About Their Relationship

Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach are on the cover of The Hollywood Reporter's latest issue, out now.

Here's what the directors and real-life couple had to say...

On the similarities between their latest movies and their lives:

Noah, on Marriage Story: “It’s not autobiographical. It’s personal. A David Lynch movie is the most personal filmmaking I could ever imagine. But nobody asks him if those things actually happened to him. It’s all him. It’s all his expression.”

Greta, on Little Women: “I’ve hidden things in there that no one will ever know how personal they are.”

Greta, on their professional rivalries: “It’s exciting to have mutual acknowledgment of the work that he and I have both put into [our movies]. There is a sense of wanting to show off for each other. At least on my part. I remember when I showed Noah cuts or drafts of Little Women. He’s my favorite filmmaker and my favorite writer. It means everything to me that he thinks it’s good.”

Noah, on their professional rivalries: “When we’re working on our own projects, we’re always talking about them and showing each other things. I always feel very much a part of what she’s done. [Little Women] is absolutely hers, but it’s not like I woke up one day and this movie’s in theaters. She’s been talking about it for a few years. It feels like, ‘How great that this is being recognized in the way that you hoped it would.’”

On dating a fellow director:

Noah: “You come home at 3 in the morning and you climb into bed and the other person’s half asleep — you feel…”

Greta: “Lonely.”

Noah: “Wrecked and lonely and you don’t even know if you got [the best footage]...The thing you want more than anything is for someone to just take care of you because shooting a movie is so much.”

Greta: “But because we’re both doing it, we haven’t necessarily always been able to be the person who was there. Sometimes it’s not completely possible.”

Laura Dern Says Her ‘Marriage Story’ Character Has ‘Delicious’ Monolgue!

Laura Dern happily hits the red carpet while stepping out for a screening of her film Marriage Story held during the 2019 AFI FEST presented by Audi at TCL Chinese Theatre on Thursday (November 21) in Hollywood.

The 52-year-old actress was accomapined by the film's writer-director Noah Baumbach, as well as The Politician's David Corenswet and Stumptown's Adrian Martinez.

Laura Dern is gaining praise for her portrayal of Nora Fanshaw - LA's foremost feminist divorce lawyer, who represents Scarlett Johansson against her husband, Charlie (Adam Driver), a New York-based theater director.

"These two people, who are wrestling with dissolution and trying to be good parents, have tried to figure out how to do this. Enter my character! She helps Scarlett's Nicole find a sharp left turn to, yes, get what she wants. But also in a way that means a win for Nora," Laura expressed about her character (via Boston Herald). "Inevitably, I think it does become about the lawyer and what they think is best — and not necessarily what they think is best for the family. It's so complicated."

"There's no more delicious Christmas present than Noah giving you that specific monologue. Even more delicious is she's stealthy and manipulative and going to be a winner and everything she is saying is definitely the truth, which makes her more complicated. [Director] Noah wanted a guide, a character to personify the business of divorce," Laura continued. "It's different than any I've ever seen. In this business, the theatrics is to present yourself as the baby friend. Their job is to say, 'Let me tell you your story and I'll win you what you want. Even if you've never said that.' You think Nora is one thing and then, at the end you learn there's something incredibly self-serving about her. It's just, pretty amazing."

Laura Dern Is Honored by Friends Naomi Watts & Gwendoline Christie at MoMA Event

Laura Dern is joined on the red carpet by friends Naomi Watts and Gwendoline Christie at MoMA's 2019 Film Benefit presented by Chanel on Tuesday night (November 12) in New York City.

The Oscar-nominated actress, who is a frontrunner to win an Academy Award next year for Marriage Story, was honored for her career.

“Courageous is the first word that comes to mind when I think of Laura Dern. Not in the somewhat clichéd way it is often used to describe actors’ role-choices, but in the fact that she has made me a more courageous viewer,” MoMA's film curator Rajendra Roy said in a statement.

He added, “Her disarming ability to shake us loose from false conventional moorings and thrust us into moments of profound truth has made her an essential artist in cinema for the past thirty-five years (she started young!). She is the ideal honoree as we inaugurate a new, more open chapter in MoMA’s history.”

Other celebs who attended the event included Adam Driver, Brooke Shields, directors Noah Baumbach and Alexander Payne, and singer Maggie Rogers, who performed.
