Olivia Colman Talks the 'Pressure' of Playing Queen Elizabeth on 'The Crown'

Olivia Colman is opening up about playing Queen Elizabeth on The Crown.

During a new interview, the 46-year-old actress revealed that she worries that the 94-year-old Queen of England doesn’t like her portrayal, while adding it’s “definitely more daunting to play someone who everyone knows.”

“It’s much harder to play people that everyone has a vision of, a picture of, and has ideas about,” Olivia shared with The Mirror. “I’ve never joined a show that’s already been up and running and successful, but I was such an enormous fan that I didn’t really think about it.”

Olivia added that she finds it even more nerve-wrecking when the real-life character you’re portraying is still alive.

“There is much more pressure when you’re playing someone who is still living, and you have this fear that they’re watching it and won’t like it,” Olivia said. “You’re thinking, ‘Oh my God, what if Queen Elizabeth II watches the series and sees me? Perhaps she will think that my interpretation is completely wrong. She’s going to change channels.’”

Despite her worries, Olivia loves being able to play Queen Elizabeth.

“I know it sounds weird, but I love the fact that she can’t say what she thinks. To express herself she leaves small signs, like crumbs,” Olivia admitted. “She’s part of a generation that was never allowed to be spontaneous, to say the first thing that crossed one’s mind. It’s a difficult position to be in but she’s handled the responsibilities very well.”

Olivia won a Golden Globe for her portrayal of Queen Elizabeth at the awards ceremony back in January.

Back in January, it was announced that Imelda Staunton will be taking over the role of Queen Elizabeth from Olivia for the final two seasons of The Crown.

'The Crown' Gets Surprise Sixth Season After Show Previously Only Planned for Five Seasons

Amazing news for The Crown fans! The show was originally supposed to contain five seasons, but the show’s creator has reconsidered and will now end after season six.

“As we started to discuss the storylines for Series 5, it soon became clear that in order to do justice to the richness and complexity of the story we should go back to the original plan and do six seasons. To be clear, Series 6 will not bring us any closer to present-day – it will simply enable us to cover the same period in greater detail,” creator Peter Morgan told Deadline.

The show currently stars Olivia Colman as Queen Elizabeth, Helena Bonham Carter as Princess Margaret, Tobias Menzies as The Duke of Edinburgh, Josh O’Connor as Prince Charles, Erin Doherty as Princess Anne, and more.

We recently found out that this controversial royal story line will NOT be a part of the show.

Season three premiered last year, and season four is expected in the coming months on Netflix.

Also set to star at Peter Sarsgaard and Jessie Buckley, with more likely to be revealed at a later time.

The film follows a college professor (Colman) whose own psychological trauma begins to resurface after meeting a woman (Johnson) and her young daughter while on summer vacation, Variety reports.

“When I finished reading Elena Ferrante’s ‘The Lost Daughter,’ I felt that something secret and true had been said out loud. And I was both disturbed and comforted by that,” Maggie said in a statement. “I immediately thought how much more intense the experience would be in a movie theatre, with other people around. And I set to work on this adaptation. I find that the script has attracted other people interested in exploring these secret truths about motherhood, sexuality, femininity, desire. And I’m thrilled to continue my collaboration with such brave and exciting actors and filmmakers.”
