Pharrell Williams Covers the New Masculinity Issue for 'GQ,' Talks Gender-Fluid Fashion

Pharrell Williams wears a dress on the cover of GQ‘s November 2019 issue, which is all about the “New Masculinity.”

Here’s what the 46-year-old entertainer told the mag, which is on newsstands October 15:

On toxic masculinity: “How f–king insecure must you be, as a human being, that because you are uncomfortable with doing something, somebody else shouldn’t be able to do it? I don’t accept that. That’s unacceptable to me.”

On his own awakening: “Some of my old songs, I would never write or sing today. I get embarrassed by some of that stuff. It just took a lot of time and growth to get to that place. ‘Blurred Lines’ opened me up. I didn’t get it at first… lyrically, I was like, What are you talking about?… And then I realized that there are men who use that same language when taking advantage of a woman, and it doesn’t matter that that’s not my behavior. Or the way I think about things. It just matters how it affects women…I realized that we live in a chauvinist culture in our country. Hadn’t realized that. Didn’t realize that some of my songs catered to that.”

On wearing gender-fluid fashion: “Well, I’m ashamed to say it was an aesthetic choice first. I liked something, and I put it on. Then the philosophy came behind it. And I do have my lines…But things that are made for women that I feel will look good on me—that I like—I will wear.”

Pharrell Williams Wins Big at XPRIZE's Visioneering Summit!

Pharrell Williams won a top prize at XPRIZE’s Visioneering Summit!

The 46-year-old entertainer led the Charter Communities team to win a top honor at the summit on Tuesday (October 8) in Los Angeles.

The XPRIZE concept proposed a competition to create transformational public housing alternatives that will provide a self-sustaining life beyond subsidized housing. This latest prize idea adds to the legacy of XPRIZE, which has launched 17 competitions and offered more than $150M in prize funds since its inception 25 years ago.

“Public housing is considered ‘the hood,’ but people living in these places aren’t treated like neighbors. We need something different; we need something better. I am the product of the public housing system and access to a safe place to live is a basic human right and an essential element of productivity,” Pharrell shared on stage. “Now more than ever we need an XPRIZE for humanity. I’m honored to work alongside the Andrew Nikou Foundation and the brilliant minds at XPRIZE to turn our design into a reality and give those who face affordable housing challenges the opportunity to pursue their goals and live life to its fullest potential. We believe this idea will echo and resonate with people across the world, and I’m looking forward to the next chapter of this journey with XPRIZE.”
