Ricky Gervais Would Only Host the Oscars Under 1 Condition

2020 Golden Globes host Ricky Gervais is revealing the one way he would say “yes” to hosting a future Academy Awards telecast.

When first asked if he would do it, he told GQ Hype, “No,” but then corrected himself and said, “Yes, but they would never ask me. Because I’d never do it on their terms. Now, if they said you can say what you want, that would really be tempting. And I know it would go terribly! I know the future. I know how badly it would go! And I still might do it.”

Ricky Gervais Slams Celebrities Complaining About Being Quarantined in Mansions with Swimming Pools

Ricky Gervais is getting real about privilege and calling out those who live in “mansions” who are complaining about being quarantined.

In an interview with The Sun, Ricky is said to have called out “celebrities, including himself,” who are complaining about being in a mansion with a swimming pool while others are risking their lives in essential services daily.

“After this is over I never want to hear people moaning about the welfare state again, I never want to hear people moaning about nurses again,” Ricky said. “These people are doing 14-hour shifts and not complaining. Wearing masks, and being left with sores, after risking their own health and their families’ health selflessly. But then I see someone complaining about being in a mansion with a swimming pool. And, you know, honestly, I just don’t want to hear it.”

Ricky Gervais’ Joke About Female Directors Gets Very Few Laughs at Golden Globes 2020

Ricky Gervais made a joke about the lack of female directors nominated at the 2020 Golden Globes – and it didn’t quite land.

The joke came as the host introduced the next category, Best Director, which made headlines for its complete lack of female nominees since they were first announced.

“A lot of controversy over our next category: no female directors were nominated this year. That’s bad,” he said.

“I’ve had a word with the HFPA and they have guaranteed this will never happen again. Working with all the major studios, [the HFPA has] agreed to go back to the way things were when they didn’t hire women directors. That will solve the problem. You’re welcome.”

There were virtually no laughs in the crowd.

“The lack of women-directors in the industry is no joke. ‘The top 100 films of 2019 were helmed by a total of 113 directors, 89.4 percent of whom were male and 10.6 percent of whom were female,’” Women in Hollywood’s Melissa Silverstein tweeted immediately after.

Jonathan Pryce Doesn’t Seem Amused by Ricky Gervais’ ‘Two Popes’ Joke at Golden Globes 2020

Ricky Gervais made plenty of jokes at Hollywood’s expense at the 2020 Golden Globes – although not everyone necessarily seemed to be laughing.

At a point early into the ceremony on Sunday night (January 5), the evening’s host began joking about Ronan Farrow coming for people in the audience following the #MeToo movement.

“Look, talking of all you perverts, it was a big year for pedophile movies: Surviving R. Kelly, Leaving Neverland, Two Popes,” he joked.

“Shut up, shut up, I don’t care,” he added as the crowd laughed and groaned, with the camera panning to Jonathan Pryce, who plays Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio, the future Pope Francis in the film.

Jonathan smiled at the host, but did not laugh along as Ricky moved onto his next topic.

“Many talented people of color were snubbed in major categories unfortunately there’s nothing we can do about that. The Hollywood Foreign Press are all very, very racist, so…” Ricky went on to say, continuing to elicit laughter and shocked responses.
