Composer Shaina Taub Arrested on Her Front Stoop While Cheering On Peaceful Protesters

Composer and singer Shaina Taub and her husband Matt Gehring were arrested on Thursday night (June 4) while clapping for peaceful protesters on their front stoop in New York City.

Shaina took to Twitter on Friday morning to talk about her experience. In the video she shared, cops said that they were breaking curfew even though they were standing on the steps of their apartment building.

“last night my husband and I got arrested on the stoop of our building on the UWS just after 8 pm. we were cheering on a peaceful protest on our block. this was my small visceral window into the police brutality black folks have experienced for centuries,” Shaina tweeted.

Shaina shared a photo that someone took of her being arrested and the caption was, “A woman is arrested and is ‘manhandled.’ She is telling the arresting officer that the handcuffs are hurting her and he is enjoying telling her that they should hurt.”

Shaina also shared a video of a delivery guy being arrested and said, “we were in the cop car with this young gentleman. he had every right to be out there and the way the cops treated him was disgusting.”

“thank u all for your concern – matt and i are home and totally okay. what’s NOT okay is this brutal unjust system that perpetually dehumanizes people of color. so show up, donate, call – make your voices heard that we will NOT stand for this state-sponsored violence ANY longer,” Shaina concluded.

Shaina appeared in the Off-Broadway productions of the musicals Hadestown and Natasha, Pierre and the Great Comet of 1812. She’s currently composing the musical version of The Devil Wears Prada with Elton John.
