'Smash' Musical Heading to Broadway!

Smash, a New Musical is coming to Broadway!

Producers Steven Spielberg, Robert Greenblatt and Neil Meron have announced today that a live stage adaptation inspired by the groundbreaking NBC series of the same name is in the works with original Smash songwriters Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman penning the score.

The new musical will apparently depart a bit from the original storyline from the TV show, but the main characters, Julia and Tom (the writers), as well as Ivy and Karen (the stars), will still be central to the story. No further plot details were announced.

“I am personally thrilled to be a part of this musical and its road to Broadway,” Steven Spielberg said in a statement. “’Smash’ is near and dear to my heart, and it seems fitting that a new musical inspired by what we did on the show would eventually come to the stage. I’m beyond thrilled to be working with this incredible creative team and my producing partners, who began the ‘Smash’ journey with me over ten years ago.”

Debra Messing is dishing on a possible Smash reboot!

The 51-year-old actress joined her former co-stars during the virtual one-night-only streaming event Bombshell in Concert on Wednesday night (May 20).

During the reunion, Debra opened up about how much the show meant to her.

“Smash is one of the things I’m most proud of,” Debra said. “You know, the fact that we were able to bring Broadway to middle America to people who will never have the money to be able to travel to me work and to actually sit in the theater.”

When the idea of a potential reboot was brought up, Debra said, “I’m constantly asked, you know, especially [because] I was on a reboot … And I’m like, ‘If it’s in New York, I’m in.’”

Smash ran for two seasons on NBC.

'Smash' Cast to Reunite Virtually for 'Bombshell' Concert Live Stream Event!

The cast of the beloved NBC musical series Smash will be reuniting next week for the one-night-only streaming event, Bombshell in Concert.

Back in 2015, the cast of the series, including Katharine McPhee and Megan Hilty, reunited for a one-night-only live performance of Bombshell, the show within the show about the life of Marilyn Monroe.

The concert was held back then to support The Actors Fund and the live stream event will support the same organization. Fans who weren’t able to attend the special event will finally get to watch it!

The evening will be introduced by Oscar winner Renee Zellweger and, during intermission, Difficult People actress Julie Klausner will host a live, virtual reunion with the show’s original cast members including: Christian Borle, Jaime Cepero, Will Chase, Brian d’Arcy James, Jack Davenport, Ann Harada, Megan Hilty, Jeremy Jordan, Katharine McPhee, Andy Mientus, Debra Messing, Leslie Odom Jr., Krysta Rodriguez, and Wesley Taylor.

Bob Greenblatt, one of the producers of the event, said, “I speak for Neil Meron and our wonderful creative team of Marc Shaiman, Scott Wittman and Joshua Bergasse when I say that we are thrilled to help raise more money for The Actors Fund and all their good work during this difficult time. Smash and Bombshell In Concert were thrilling experiences for us, and we are overjoyed that fans everywhere will get to finally see these amazing performances. We’re grateful to everyone at The Actors Fund and PEOPLE for their love of the performing arts.”

The special event will stream on Wednesday, May 20 at 8pm ET on People.com, PeopleTV, and People‘s social platforms.

Katharine McPhee Reveals Who She Thinks Should Have Played Marilyn on 'Smash'

Katharine McPhee live-tweeted the season one finale of Smash on Friday night (March 27) and she revealed who she thinks should have played Marilyn Monroe in the musical Bombshell!

The NBC series followed the making of a new Broadway musical about the iconic actress and two actresses were competing for the role – Karen, a newcomer played by Kat, and Ivy, a Broadway veteran played by Megan Hilty.

At the end of season one, Karen has earned the role of Marilyn and stars in the out-of-town production of Bombshell. In the second season though, Karen quits the show to star in the musical Hit List and Ivy ends up bringing the show to Broadway. Ivy wins the Tony Award for Best Actress.

So, who does Kat think should’ve played the role?

“if you want my HONEST opinion- love you Karen, but Ivy probably should’ve been Marilyn. #SmashLives,” Kat tweeted.

Katharine McPhee Will Reunite with 'Smash' Stars During a Special Live Stream

Katharine McPhee and some other stars from the NBC series Smash will be reuniting during a live stream event TODAY (March 20)!

Kat will join Jeremy Jordan, Krysta Rodriguez, and Andy Mientus on the next episode of the Broadway Jackbox series, hosted by former Dear Evan Hansen actors Andrew Barth Feldman and Alex Boniello.

Broadway Jackbox airs on Tuesdays and Fridays at 6pm EST on Twitch. The show will be raising money for The Actors Fund during the stream.

“The first ones were such a blast,” Andrew said in a statement (via BroadwayWorld.com). “They completely achieved our goal of creating something silly, fun, and distracting amidst this craziness, but Alex and I both realized we could use this to give back to our community in a more concrete way. With the theater community in such a state of flux, it only seemed right to give to The Actors Fund who are doing all they can to help our industry through this insane, unprecedented time. So let’s have some fun and do some good! And also, as the self-appointed head of the #ReviveSmash campaign, this is big for me.”

Kat, Jeremy, Krysta, and Andy‘s characters on Smash were all part of the musical Hit List, which was a competitor to Bombshell.

“.@andrewbfeldman & @AlexBoniello are getting the smash cast together. @andrewbfeldman & @AlexBoniello are getting the smash cast together. I REPEAT @andrewbfeldman & @AlexBoniello are getting the SMASH cast together on #BwayJackbox!” Kat tweeted.

On Thursday night, Kat had Jeremy as a guest on her own Instagram Live. Watch a video below!
