Spike Lee Didn't Know Chadwick Boseman Had Cancer But 'He Did Not Look Well' During 'Da 5 Bloods' Filming

Director Spike Lee is opening up about not knowing that Chadwick Boseman was sick with colon cancer while filming Da 5 Bloods, which was released earlier this year.

“I didn’t know Chad was sick. He did not look well, but my mind never took that he had cancer. It was a very strenuous shoot,” Spike told Variety. “I mean, we all didn’t get to Vietnam until the end of the movie at Ho Chi Minh City. But that other stuff, the jungle stuff, was shot in Thailand. It was 100 degrees every day. It was also at that time the worst air pollution in the world.”

“I understand why Chadwick didn’t tell me, because he didn’t want me to take it easy,” he added. “If I had known, I wouldn’t have made him do the stuff. And I respect him for that.”

He then revealed how he found out about the tragic news of Chadwick‘s death.

“That night, for some reason, I went to bed early. And the fact that I went to bed early, I woke up early. It must have been I was tired. I went to open my phone, and my phone — the whole thing had been blowing up. I turned it off. I was in shock,” he recalled. “And most recently, with my lovely wife, Tonya, we watched it [“Da 5 Bloods”] again for the first time after his transition. And it plays totally different. He’s a ghost already. You know the scene I’m talking about? It’s the scene where he comes back, him and Delroy. I felt it when we shot it.”

Spike Lee Apologizes For His Comments Defending Woody Allen

Spike Lee is backtracking on his public support for Woody Allen.

The 63-year-old Oscar winning director has apologized after first supporting Woody and denouncing “cancel culture”.

“I’d just like to say Woody Allen is a great, great filmmaker, and this cancel thing is not just Woody,” Spike first said in a radio interview last week. “When we look back on it, we are going to see that you can’t just erase someone like they never existed. He’s a friend of mine and I know he’s going through it right now.”

After fans shared their disappointment about his words, Spike addressed them, apologizing.

“I Deeply Apologize. My Words Were WRONG. I Do Not And Will Not Tolerate Sexual Harassment, Assault Or Violence,” he wrote on Twitter. “Such Treatment Causes Real Damage That Can’t Be Minimized.-Truly, Spike Lee.”

Woody‘s estranged daughter, Dylan Farrow, retweeted Spike‘s apology and thanked him for it.

Spike Lee Calls Woody Allen His 'Friend,' Defends Him Against Cancel Culture

Spike Lee is speaking out against “cancel” culture and how it has affected his friend Woody Allen.

Woody was accused of molestation by his daughter Dylan Farrow and many celebs that he worked with over the years have said they regret making movies with him.

“I’d just like to say Woody Allen is a great, great filmmaker and this cancel thing is not just Woody,” Spike said on WOR’s “In the Morning” show (via TheWrap). “When we look back on it we are going to see that — short of killing somebody — I don’t know you just erase someone like they never existed.”

Woody is a friend of mine, a fellow Knick fan, and I know he’s going through it right now,” he added.

Spike was on the radio show to promote his new Netflix movie Da 5 Bloods, which is out now.

A couple weeks ago, Woody spoke out and slammed the actors who have denounced him.

Spike Lee Explains What He Thinks of Calls to Defund the Police - Watch (Video)

The BlacKkKlansman director spoke out on the Off The Rails show on SiriusXM’s TODAY Show Radio on Tuesday (June 9).

“Now it gets tricky when they say ‘defund the police’ because people are not thinking like ‘we don’t need police officers.’ We need police!” he said.

“Let the record state, I’m telling my brother Al Roker we need police, but we need a police system that is just. And it’s so hard with the police unions. I mean they protect their guys, they protect that blue no matter what. And so that has to be dealt with…they have to be careful with the words because already this guy is running with that. You know the guy I’m talking about. Agent Orange. And again, he’s trying to twist the narrative like they did with Kaepernick and the kneeling – trying to say that was about disrespecting the flag, but that wasn’t it at all. We’ve got to be careful what we say because one or two wrong words, they’ll twist that thing around and the narratives change. I don’t think people are saying we don’t need police at all, but ‘defund the police’ – I think there [could] be better terminology.”

Here are ways to support the Black Lives Matter movement.
